Her P166MMX (my old machine :p) finally crapped out. Hard drive is FUBARed and we both decided it's time. I told her she should have gotten a new one awhile but oh well. It's frustrating to use it really.

Anyway, here is what I have planned for her:

(Note: She uses the net, email (Hotmail), and Word)

FOXCONN SUPER CASE (BLACK) Front USB MID TOWER CASE 1150-P4-BK (w/ 300W PSU) $44
TOSHIBA INTERNAL DVD ROM, 16X DVD, 48X CD ROM (I'm taking this one, putting my 6x DVD/32x CD in hers :p) $39
Thermaltake VOLCANO 6Cu (It's 'only' 31dBa - that's the main reason I chose it) $11
IBM 40GB 7200RPM Model # IC35L040AVVN07-0, Part # 07N8450 - 120GXP OEM, DRIVE ONLY (Are there any 20GB drives for like $50 or less anywhere? This is big time overkill) $71
Crucial Micron 128MB 16x64 PC2100 DDR RAM $26
SHUTTLE AK31A AMD K7 VIA APOLLO KT266A DDR SOCKET A ATX MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL (I might take this too and give my mom my Epox 8K7A...kinda sad...I paid almost $140 shipped for this 8K7A last august and then ~1-2 months later it was getting outperformed by KT266A's) $59
AMD DURON 950MHz 200MHz FSB SOCKET A PGA $36
ATI OEM RADEON 7000 VE 32MB DDR $37 (Overkill...but it's only $37 - what else will I get for $37 or lower?)

Including shipping, this is ~$355

I would like to get it down to about $300, but it's not imperative. Any ideas/recommendations (price related or not price related, whatever)?

Thanks.

[*]Bad juju w/ the thermalcrap HSF. Buy a retail boxed Duron instead.
[*]IBM Deathstars are a gamble. I wouldn't risk my data on that drive. Check out the 40GB Maxtor D740x instead.

Go to Price Watch and search for 20.0GB 7200 and thre are some cheep ones out there. One that pops up is the WD200BB 7200RPM for 61 shipped. Thats 10 bucks shaved off. Just look around there and try to find some good stuff.

Also if you mom is at all like my mom she likes everything big on the screen. Like 800x600 so couldnt you just use the old PCI graphics card? ( assuming she has a PCI one) Or just get a PCI one off pricewatch. They are cheaper...

you could get a motherboard with integrated video to save a little money. ECS makes some cheap ones to go with amd processors.

I've had a 60GXP for almost a year now with no trouble. My friend has the infamous 45GB 75GXP that he has been using for a year and 9 months with no trouble. I'm not too worried really - I'll check out that maxtor drive anyway though. :)

What's wrong with the thermaltake? Heh, it's not like I'm overclocking. However, if the stock HS/Fan is quieter, that's a different story. I'll check that out too though - find out the price difference. EDIT: Price difference is pretty significant; is it worth it?

I think you might want to take a look at the Seagate 40gb barracuda instead of the Maxtor since it's quieter, and lotsa people like it.

Go with the stock hsf cuz the volcano 6cu is LOUD!!!! They say it's 31dBa but I've heard one, and it's closer to 38dBa I think. My dad's Taisol cooler's 32dBa (same fan as retail) is much quieter.

Instead of getting a Radeon 7000 I saw a $38 Radeon DDR, so it'll allow for some decent gaming (not that your mom would, but who knows).

RAM: go ahead and get 256mb I think. It'll save you an upgrade later.

Sound: um don't you need sound for basic windows sounds? Or does the ak31a or 8k7a have some integrated stuff?

The sound is the onboard AC97 stuff. It gets the job done for her little, tinny speakers. Heh.

So about the stock HS/Fan...I'm having trouble finding a cheap retail Duron...any ideas?

I really don't think she needs the extra RAM. If at a later time she needs it, I'll get her another stick, but I don't see that being an issue.

I'll check out that seagate drive! Hmm...perhaps I'll peruse the FS/FT for a smaller hard drive...and some other parts.

I'd rather not go with integrated video actually, in case when I have some friends over this summer maybe a little UT gaming. ;) Not to mention, integrated video sucks...and sucks system RAM away too.

Thanks for the recomendations - keep 'em coming! You guys rock. :)

Why spend 1500 bones when 350 will get a better machine? :) Not to mention, I really enjoy getting specs for and building computers, so it's a win-win situation. Heh.
