Building manager came in and changed all our lightbulbs? WTF?

My girlfriend and I came home last night and flipped on the light to the entry way in our apartment. We immediately noticed that the light was brighter than usual. Upon further investigation we found that the light bulb was replaced with a higher intensity "high efficiency" bulb. Not only did they change the bulb in the entry way, they changed all the bulbs in our apartment, even the lamps on our bedroom nightstands. They even replaced the 40 watt bulb in the lamp on my computer desk with an already blown 60 watt bulb.

First of all I have no idea why they would change our bulbs, since power is not included in our rent. We pay our own power so what bulbs we use should be none of their concern.

Secondly this is creepy as fuck. Someone just walked into our apartment in the middle of the day, and changed all of our light bulbs, without permission, without any notice, and without even so much as a note left to know what they had done. They also kindly left our storage room door open so that our cat could get in there and knock over all of our stuff while we were gone. They even took all of the old bulbs with them? WTF?

I am so tired of this. I have specifically told them before, any time they need to come in to the apartment they need to at least one of us know first. Something I shouldn't need to say considering they are legally required to give at least 24 hours notice (unless it's an emergency). Worse yet things remain broken in our apartment which we reported to them the day we moved in 2 years ago, and yet they can find the time to come in and change all of our light bulbs which they aren't even responsible for.

Think it's time to file a complaint with the tenancy board...

All apartments have a clause in the contract that Management has the right to come in your apartment at any time without warning.

You don't own the apartment, you are just a peon.

False.

3. Assuming it is not an emergency, but the landlord has a valid reason to enter -- for example, to make repairs -- what kind of notice is required?

States typically require landlords to provide a specific amount of notice (usually 24 hours) before entering a rental unit. In some states, such as California, landlords must provide a reasonable amount of notice, legally presumed to be 24 hours. Landlords can usually enter on shorter notice if it is impracticable to provide the required amount of notice.

Um actually no. They do not have the right to come in at anytime. As I said they only have that right in emergency situations, like if the fire alarm goes off, or if there is a water leak. Other wise they are legally required to provide 24 hours notice. Not to mention they tampered with, and technically have stolen our property.

...they came in unannounced and changed your lightbulbs to higher output??

Hire a Private Detective to sweep your apartment for cameras...

Because if you can afford a house and still choose to live in an apartment then I don't feel bad for you. Apartments suck ass and incidents like this should be expected.

Where in my post did I say we can afford to move into a house? We are saving, but I can't afford it right now. If we could we would have moved already. And no this is not the sort of thing that is expected. I have lived in 3 other apartments, and have never had an issue like this. Since it is in fact illegal, and any half decently intelligent supervisor would be aware of that.

Well good. Hopefully bullshit like this makes you put a few extra dollars into the get a house fund.

I was just messing with you about it is expected. It really is creepy and I would definitely file a complaint or even call the police and find a different place to live. Im not sure what legal course of action to take but your rights have definitely been violated. Sounds like a pervert runs that place. You must have a pretty girlfriend. Good looking women always have to deal with shit like this.

Yeah they did the same in my apartment too. In my case though.. They explained why they were doing it.

Our management had a contract with the power company and they changed all the bulbs as per the guidelines provided by it.

I'd be PISSED. I hate bright lighting, and use 40w incandescents, or low wattage CFLs everywhere. What if you had expensive LEDs in your fixtures? I'm not big on complaining about things, but I'd definitely complain in this case. They'd better replace all the bulbs they removed from my house.

not 100% right.

every one has a clause that says they can enter in case of a emergency or with 24 hours notice.

just because you rent does not give up your right to privacy. yeah i would be pissed off too.

Indeed. They replaced all our 40 watt soft glow lamps with 60 watt bulbs. Basically burning our eyes out when we flipped on the nightstand lights in the bedroom.

Plug them into a kill-a-watt and see watt the drawl is...

They could be 55W bulbs using the other 5W for IDE (integrated device electronics). An electret mic, 802.11b module, etc. to listen to your "hobbling noise" at night near the bed. Stuff like that. 😉

We will be removing all the bulbs they installed anyway since they are completely the wrong intensity.

I have not spoken to the landlord about this yet. This is not the first time they have come in unannounced, and everything we say to them falls on deaf ears. This time I will be doing directly to the property owner.

You have a valid complaint about them entering your apartment without anyone being home, for a non emergency type of event. They would be allowed to do do, say for burst water pipe or fire type of issue. As to changing the bulbs, the incandescent bulbs days are numbered. There are regulations on the books now, to eventually stop making, selling and using them, as they are very inefficient, albeit cheap. I don't care, I just do not want compact flourescent bulbs, as they look like crap and cost too much. I would prefer a halogen or an LED type bulb, when I am forced to switch over. See link:

For the US the phase out is in 2014 .. Canada phase out is 2012

I wholeheartedly agree. When someone breaks into your home and hides in your closet, waiting for you to get home, watches you shower and then stabs you to death while you sleep. that is a first-world problem. be sure to write that down somewhere so that the gentlemen who wipes your tracheal blood off of his knife wont get into trouble.
