Ok, as the title says, "Building First System". I'm gonna start building myself another system. After being teased about having a Compaq. So I've decided to get a few things now that I think are crucial to begin with. Sorry to bore you and all but any and all comments, positive and negative are welcome. I'm working on a semi-tight budget, just to let you know. On to the specs I want so far...

Budget for those parts is 500-600 U.S. Dollars (maybe/probably less, I don't know at the moment)

Processor: Either a Celeron 533a FCPGA (???) or a Duron 650
Motherboard: Gigabyte or Asus (both were recomended to me by friends. Any other great boards I don't know of, please, list them)
Case: Fong Kai (the one with 3 5 1/4 slots) or a Enlight (the one with 4 5 1/4 slots)
Memory: 128 meg 133 mhz (don't know any brands)

*Note: I'm new to this. Please be semi-really nice. Again thank you for your comments.

Go with a Duron and Asus combo, and if you realy want to impress your friends, then get alot of fans and stick them just about anywhere inside the case.

I'd go with the Duron. The celery is kinda obsolete... except you can overclock it like mad. But The Duron is simply a better chip right now.

Are you looking to overclock or run at stock? If you're not going to oc, I'd second sillyputty's suggestions, but if you're looking to oc, I'd wait a little longer (as Anand alluded to in his Athlon oc discussion this morning, the big manufacturers may soon be making mobos that let you overclock the duron through multiplier adjustments without having to make manual mods to the board).

FWIW, if you do decide to go Celeron, I've always had good luck with the Abit BM6 motherboard.

If you have the choice, though, I'd go Duron as well. Asus boards are good. I've used a lot of Abit boards and they've all been great (I like their extra features).

For RAM, if you're not overclocking, then pretty much any generic PC133 will do ya'. If you plan on cranking up the bus speed, I'd go for the Infineon. Something from Mushkin or Corsair.

Thanks everyone for your comments. No I don't plan on overclocking anything. Everything will remain stock for now. At the moment after some research I think I might get the Asus A7V board and a Duron 600. Unless anyone can tell me otherwise. Oh yah, does anyone know how much shipping a Fong Kai 603 case to Hawaii would cost? Thanks!
