hey all, i'm building a new raid pc and have a question. where do the cables hook up for the mirrored drive? i have an epox 8k7a raid mobo., but when i go into bios (ctrl + h) to set raid up it can only find one drive. do both drives need to be hooked up to raid or ?. right now i have one hooked to IDE-1 (mas.) and the other hooked to RAID-1 (mas.) but only one drive is found. what am i missing????😕

If you want to run those 2 drives in RAID 1 they will both need to be connected to the RAID ports.

Thanks!! i will try that. im not sure if raid 1 is the same as mirror or not. all i want to do is mirror my primary to my raid drive (i have 2 40gb. drives.) is that the right way for this??

RAID 1 is mirroring, but I'm not sure if your RAID controller can create a RAID 1 array without destroying your existing data. Proceed with caution 😉.

Any drives that you want to use in any raid config must be connected to the same raid controller. Raid 1 (mirroring) will give more reliability but the speed doesn't increase.

you guys are great. thanks alot! okay so if i understand this correctly... (this is a brand new set up) i hook both hdds to my raid 1 on the mobo. nothing but my cd-rom & dvd ram drive go to ide 1 & 2 on the mobo. am i heading in the right direction? i'm not concerned about losing any data.

Yeah, CD-ROM & DVD on IDE 1 & 2
HDD's on RAID 1 & 2

You might as well have both HDD's on different channels as this would give you better speed (especially when dealing with RAID), but they both have to be connected to the RAID controller.

The southbridge is connected to IDE 1 & 2 & the RAID controller is connected to RAID 1 & 2. You need all RAID'ed HDD's on the RAID controller & all Optical Drives (CD-ROM, ect.) on the Southbridge.
