Hello,

I am putting together my new amd system tonight.
Ihave an am xp 1700+, epox 8kha+ mainboard, 512 megs ddr etc.

When I bought the cpu, it shipped with a seperate coolermaster dp5-6I31-a1 heatsink.

amd approves this heatsink btw for an xp1700+ chip, but that is the cutoff point. it is not recommended for any other chips higher than the 1700.

I always learn alot reading these forums, so I thought Iwould post and ask the experts here if this heatsink will do the trick for me. I do not plan on overclocking at all, and if i do I will definatly get a better heatsink.

So, since i wont be oc'ing, will this chip be ok for me?

Thanks in advance for any input.

If AMD approves it with that processor, then you should be fine. Coolermaster makes decent HSFs. If you find your temps are higher than you want or plan to OC, then a better HSF will be the way to go. Good Luck!

Ok thanks for the advice.

Im just kind of nervous because this is my first AMD system and I have read all about the importance of heatsinks with amd chips on these boards and this website for quite sometime before making my purchases.

I was planning to order a heatsink seperately but my chip arrived with that coolermaster.

I'll give it a shot tonight, hopefully all will go smoothly:)

Thanks,

Valix

You should be fine. AMD gives that HSF out with their XPP package for 1800+ processors. That HSF might have been a bit on the scary side for Athlon-C's, but XP's run cooler so that HSF will put you well into acceptable temperature ranges if you don't overclock.

Well, congratulations on your purchase. I recently purchased my first AMD. One thing I've learned... If the heatsink isn't installed yet, you may want to order some Arctic Silver, and slap it on first. Also, after last night, I now know the importance of a shim. :( But whatever you do, remember, to have fun, because that's a fast machine!
