building fail over file system

I would like to know has anyone here ever built a fail over file system. What I mean by that is if one file server goes out another kicks in and the user will never know. I know this can be accomplished with dfs on windows 2000 or 2003. I would like to know how does dfs handle personnel user data for example. Lets say that I sync my documents folder to a share thats on the server. Well if server one goes down I want that user to still have access to there documents.

DFS in conjunction with Active Directory can provide high-availability filesharing. (It uses SMB redirection for those really interested in 'how it works')

Technet has a few articles on how Domain DFS fits together, and components required to get such fault-tolerance.
