Building DMI Pool!

Senior member
i have a duron box:

800 MHz
MSI K7TM (via166a)
256 meg crucial ram
maxtor 30 gig HD
plextor burner
kensington nic
hercules prophet 4000x (agp kyro I based card)

anyways, the problem started when i got home this summer and the family computer was getting ultra funky (virii from uninformed users...). I had redhat on a seperate partition and decided to blast the hd and reinstall windows to use the whole space (no one used linux other than me).

I knew that windows wouldn't be able to get rid of the linux partitions (i tried it earlier) so i tried loading up fdisk from my slack cd. I gave me a kernel panic (before fully booting up), then i got a crc error the next time i tried. I dug around and found my maxtor hd utility. I booted it up, it said loading drdos, and then it gave me a garbled image of the splash screen, and it just sat there.

so i took out the disk and rebooted, and now it gets stuck on "building DMI pool" (note, this is NOT verifying dmi pool), and it sits there, i didn't know if it was just slow, so one time i let it go for an hour, and now i know for sure its really not building anything.

I've taken out the ram, i was planning on taking out all the other peripherals, but it doesn't seem likely it will be able to help anything. I did some searches but i couldn't find a solution that worked.

I did clear the cmos and adjust some bios settings, no go though. I can't boot up to any media, for the dmi pool shows up just before any boot device is able to be accessed.

i don't think its a purely hardware problem (if it is, its the mobo i guess), b/c i've heard of other people fixing it, and it came up after i changed some settings.

Clear CMOS + Reset Configuration Data (aka Force ESDC data update) in BIOS.

Make sure that you changed Floppy (or whatever you wanted to boot) to be 1st in the boot order when you tried to boot other media.
Try disconnecting everyting from the MB except power, video, ram, cpu to isolate the problem.

i already cleared the cmos and the escd,
i can't fdisk, it halts before anything can boot

i took off everything from the mobo off but the cpu and ram (used onboard video), still have the same problem.

anymore help/suggestions?
