building computers

Coligion

Junior Member
I have some friends that want me to build them a custom computer. I'm going to help them choose parts, accessories, and put everything together. Is it legal for them to compensate me for the time I spend with this? Like say if one of them pays me $80 or something for my help, is there anything wrong with them doing that (legal, I should say).

Give him a break. He must be, like, 6 or something.

No, it's not illegal, Coligion. Now go back to playing with your colored letter blocks.

Yes, it is now illegal to work for money in the United States. Sue away.

Technically, if you make less than $600 per year, you don't have to pay federal tax on that income. However, check with your state as to how much the lowest income in the lowest tax bracket is. It might be more or less than $600.

If you *do* end up doing this a lot, you're going to be considered in business for yourself and you have to pay all kinds of bullsh|t like payroll tax, etc. That is... if you even bother reporting it

Well if we wanted to make this simple for him, we could have just pointed him to a Macintosh forum in the first place, but we didn't.

Shall I discuss the laws of thermodynamics now? 😀

May be time to discuss imposing the ATOT tax on him... 30% of what he makes building computers goes back to the community...

After all, he probably got the knowledge to build one from this place anyway. I did.

That's not a bad idea. Impossible to actually enforce, but I learned a LOT of sh|t here. I loved the Subscriber service 🙁

Actually, it's $5000, but the point itself still stands. If a business makes less than $5k a year (let's say...via eBay), they don't have to file.

I always thought taxes were optional anyway? I'm just happy you only have to file every 2 years...

I build and fix PC's for people all the time, no issue with it.

I only do it for friends and family though, and don't ask for any money in return but the all always give it to me anyways.

Except my brother, cheap bastard 😛

Be sure to explicitly state that you're not responsible for repairs/parts after the first month or so. Computer = stable means you have no maintnence responsibilities.

""I'm looking to build a computer for the first time, but have some questions about oem products. From what I've read they seem to be legit products, minus the retail box and intructions. My questions is are they legal to buy for the average joe system builder? I've read and been told that the only legit way to buy oem stuff is if you are a certified system builder, which i am not obviously. I'm just looking to build the system for my own use and save some money if it's all correct. Does what I'm saying also carry over to Windows XP oem as well? Thanks for the input. ""

Seems hes pretty concerned with the law...
