Building Computer

Hi,

I really dont know a thing about computers so i just saw a link to this place and decided to ask.

Well i have a dell that i paid for last summer paid around 800 for it.

I already have monitor, speakers, mouse, and keyboard that i want to keep.

What i need this computer for is mostly games and web design and other things. But mostly games.

Im looking for a very fast computer and my budget would be around 600-800 dollors so kinda cheap.

If you could give me links to anything that i should buy at good prices.

What i need i think is like a nice case, dvd burner ill use the 2 other cd drives from dell, lots of ram so 1mb or like 1mb 512 or how ever u say it, mother board, hard drive, graphic card, and all the basic stuff that i need.

Thanks

post how much ur willing to spend? we need a price range.

the the its not 1mb its 1gig = 1024mb.

Before we continue though, are you capable of building your own PC, or do you know somebody near you that can? Otherwise, you'll have to rely on websites like Monarch or companies like Dell.

ok i like all that but what about the video card i dont think i need a really nice one. what i would be using this comp for would be mostly a game starcraft but it can run on most computers so that doesnt matter but i doubt i will be playing doom 3 or somthin.

so what would be a nice video card that would run a game like lord of the rings battle for middle earth or somthin like that range. thanks

get ATI Radeon 9600, 9700, 9800 (Pro or xt versions). it'll serve you well. 1 gb of generic ram will do. that should be abt 250.

maybe a year ago these would be good recommendations but with the advent of the x700 and 6600gt, those cards at their current prices are no longer the best deals.

It sounds like maybe you shouldn't build your own PC. HP/Compaq is offering some great deals on socket 754 systems. Check them out at http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp...mpaq_presario&storeName=computer_store & http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp...s/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store

Sample configurations:

Compaq: fast processor, but less RAM & VRAM (I recommend this!)
Athlon 64 3300+
512 MB RAM
128 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200XT with TV-out
200 GB hard disk
double layer DVD burner
5.1 audio
Windows XP Home SP2
$703 after $50 mail-in rebate (grand total after tax & shipping)

HP: slower processor, but more RAM & VRAM
Sempron 3100+
1 GB RAM
256 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForceFX 5500 with DVI & TV-out
160 GB hard disk
double layer DVD burner
5.1 audio
Windows XP Home SP2
$735 after $50 mail-in rebate (grand total after tax & shipping)

ya i have a friend that can help me. but the thing is im not at my house in Idaho im in Florida ^^;; so cant really do much

I'm in need of purchasing a motherboard and CPU since my old one just died. I'm not a gamer and I don't care too much about video as long as I can watch movies. I use computers for multimedia, web, and video production (editing, compressing, etc). Should I go with Athlon 64 now (I had a P4 2.8)? I remember reading somewhere that P4 is faster in encoding video. Is it still the same now?

I'm looking at Pentium 4 530J 800MHz FSB LGA 775 Processor (the one in this thread) or A64 3200+. Which one would give me better performance? Also A64 3000+ seems much cheaper. How is A64 3000+'s overclockability? Can I run it faster than 3200+ with reasonable success rate?

Please recommend a good mobo to go with either processor. I like to have 4 memory slots since I have 3 DDR RAMs. Onboard video card and firewire would be nice but not necessary.

Thanks a lot for your help,

cpliu
