Building computer..couple of questions regarding cpu

Hi, I've always used AMD processors, and i know they have been known better for gaming, as where intel better for multi-tasking operations, ie photoshop, winrar, and etc.

Im building a multimedia computer whereby its main purpose will be to able to have several programs open that require alot of memory, and to be able to run them very fast.

These are the components that i have selected so far.

HARD-DRIVE: Western Digital WD1500ADFD: King Raptor

MEMORY: CORSAIR 500MHZ DDR NO-ECC 1024M TWINX PRO X 2

Now, My first question is, I wanted to go with AMD orginally, but i couldn't find any motherboards that were socket 939 and could support the ram which runs at 500mhz. Im not sure if its because i didnt look hard enough, or its just not available yet.

So i decided that i would need to go with intel and a motherboard which supports ram @ 500mhz.

If i cant go AMD, then i found this motherboard which looked good:

P4 S775 ASUS P5WD2-E PREMIUM 975X PCIE

So my second question is, what processor would you guys recommend to go with that?

I live in Canada so http://www.microbytes.com is where i get most of my stuff.

No motherboard on the amd market officially fully supports the ddr 500 but most DFI boards as well as other premium boards do (even my lowly ecs nforce3 has ddr500)
Go check out the motherboard forum on anandtech and read through several posts and you should find what you need. And as far as your performance difference between ddr 400 and ddr 500 on amd chips, there was an article a month ago that showed the difference between each speed.

Athlon X2 is much better at multitasking. Memory speed is not as relevent for the X2's. I would focus more on how much memory, not as much on speed. I would get a 4200+, or a 4600+ or an FX-60 in all depending on your budget. Get 2GB of DDR 4000 (that way you can overclock) I heard G.Skill is good. Get an Asus A8n-SLI premium, i heard they are very stable, and can overclock too.

DDR 500 also known as PC4000 is overclocking RAM, there are no systems from either AMD or Intel that use it at it's rated speed of 250Mhz with stock settings you only use it at 250Mhz when you overclock. Intel currently use a different type of RAM called DDR2, which is deceptivly different, if you did buy an intel system with that RAM you listed you'd never get it to work (like trying to use diesel in a petrol engine).

Whatever you do don't buy anything yet, you need a bit more education in the mystical world of computers by the looks of things.

1) What programs are you going to use on it
2) What is your budget

Thx for all the input, Im happy to hear that AMD is still as good or better in terms of multi-tasking operations.

Im not buying anything today, but hopefully next week when i have the list of components that fit my criteria.

Basically, i would like to avoid overclocking, or do the least of it, even though i know it would increase performance. It will be used in the company i work for, therefore i want it to be stable and etc.

As for the budget, My boss gave me a range of 2000-3000 $, talking canadian prices, and this would be for the whole system.

If i decide to go with AMD ATHLON64 X2 4400+ 2.20G/2000/1M/S939, what ram + mobo would you recommend?

* on a side note, i can use this computer for gaming on the week-ends, but the primary focus is multi-tasking operations for work.

Someone asked what type of operations, well it could be like from scanning a document, working on photoshop, and doing these type of activities at once etc.

Thats just a little over $2000. $2078 to be exact, minus shipping. You got yourself a top of the line processor, with a great motherboard, and some pretty speedy memory, and a great graphics card. You and your boss will be proud i think.

Doh candadian prices! Well subract that FX-60 and get the 4800+. It will be good enough.

4800X2 (blindingly fast CPU, the FX is faster but 92% of the performance at a much lower price is always good)
A8N E (very stable motherboard, all the features you need.
2x1gb RAM (Any, low latency will provide 1-3% performance increases, might as well. You might want more RAM in the future but it's best to start with 2GB)
HDs (How high is up, raptor 150s are the fastest out there, but if you need more storage space then WD4000KDs are ace)
7800GT, wonderful card perfect for 1240x1080, if you want higher resoultions than that then think about waiting for a 7900GT or going for the X1900XT.
500W enermax liberty PSU.

thx guys, i spoke to my boss again, and pretty much told me to go all out.

so i will stick with the duel 4800, but im thinking ati x1900XTX and as for the hardrive, i was thinking one sata 150 raptor, and my boss wanted 4 other hardrives together in raid. I'm not familiar with this, so im gonna have to find out how to set it up etc.

for the ram, is two gigs just enough? or getting 4gigs will show a performace increase greater then 25%?

I think 2GB will be more than enough. It all depends on what your going to be doing. Somtimes (not always) the more ram sticks you have in your PC the slower it can get ( AGAIN, IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR DOING). I would just get 2 1GB sticks for now, and you can always upgrade 2 more 1GB sticks later. And i think the x900xt would be fast enough, you should be able to overclock the gpu to XTX speeds.

thx josh and friends, too bad newegg.com doenst ship to canada. Im going to see what i can get here in canada. I think two gigs should be fine too, and the limit is 4gig, so as you were saying i can always go back.

i know im in the wrong section, but how would it work for having 4 sata drives, and having raptor 150 and the rest for storage etc? Im not too familiair with raid 0 and 1? anyways im going to try and do some research.

That's alot of storage you plan on getting i guess. That WD Raptor 150 would be really nice at loading, I read a review with that raptor 150GB (10,000RPM) it was fast, but i don't know if it would be justifiable over a 400GB that is only a couple secounds slower.
