I don't know much about current hardware, but it's time for to build myself a new machine. Here is what I've picked out.

one of the Athlon XP 's - i'm not sure which one yet, but the 1600 seems the best bang for the buck.
EPoX EP-8KHA+
Western Digital WD1000BB Special Edition
some aluminum Lian Li case

I'm confused as to which DDR ram to get. Do I want PC1600, PC2100, PC2400, PC2700, etc? What do you think of my other hardware choices?

That case is far from being Best Bang For The Buck but you have to look at it all day contrary to the parts inside your PC.;)

The memory you should use depends on if you'll overclock or not. With the Epox MB you can put some aggressive memory timings so even if you run it @ 133 (266 DDR) it would be better to take the PC2400 at least.

Isn't a lot of PC2400 memory just PC2100 memory that will run faster as there is no official spec for pc2400? Crucials memory does that just fine :)

Next week Wednesday my Western Digital WD1000BB-SE will be here so I'll finish my new system. Athlon XP 1600, Epox 8kha+, 2x 256mb Crucial PC2100, and an Antec 1030b w/ 300w Antec psu. If you like I'll post Sandra and hdtach scores when I get it all together.

Buy.com has the retail 1600 for 124.95 shipped. Search pricewatch.com for 100gb Western Digital, pclink2000.com has it for $219 + S&H.
