Building an AMD.... help needed....=/

I just recently got a 2700+ xp and FIC kt-748 motherboard. I put everything together right, or what i thought was right but it does not work. It starts up with everything plugged in but shuts off immediately and makes a long beep and a short beep very quietly with the red light on the motherboard on. When i take the 12v connector out it just boots and does not beep at all but does not shut off and there is no red light on the motherboard. Anyone have any ideas to help me out or know the problem. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
 
Is your HSF on propery? If not, your CPU will over heat and maybe that's why? Did you check all your jumpers and make sure all of them are correct? Maybe your PSU isn't giving enough juice for your system and try checking the ram.
 
Yeah, one reason an AMD system may shut down immediately is if your heatsink is attached like this instead of like this. The CPU in the first picture will overheat instantly, because it's generating ~45-65W of heat and the heatsink isn't landing flat on it. Think about how fast your thumbnail would heat up with 60W of heat going into it, and you can see why the CPU core signals for an emergency shutdown! 😉

LOL (really!) 😀 I can assure you that I've already got my +1000 posts as a result of the dimwit engineers at AMD not making their heatsinks un-reversible. I mean seriously, if they'd simply made the clip and socket so it had two lugs on one end, and three lugs on the other, or something...

They need to hire at least one engineer who's passed his Common Sense+ certification, that's what I say. Maybe they finally did. 😛 THANK GOODNESS THE HAMMER HEATSINKS AND CLIPS ARE SYMMETRICAL!!! 😛
 
Hmm...did u remember to use risers for the MB? make sure nothing is shorting out. I doubt the PS or ram will cause a problem (just build an Athlon XP 2200+ with a 250W PSU). The problem is most likely to be MB or CPU. also try reseating the CPU
 
Why not investigate the beep codes? It's trying to tell you something about the problem. Check your mobo manual for the beep codes. If it (the mobo) has diagnostic LEDs, check'em out and see what prob is indicated also.

I was not aware you needed the 12v connector on amd boards

And sometimes it helps overclockability (if there is such a word 😛) and system stability. All Intel boards require this so all higher quality PSUs will have the 12v connector. I would use it if you can.

Thanks everyone, posting from the system right now. It was the heatsink. I didn't think i would make that mistake since i've built an AMD before but I didn't notice that it wasn't flat because the case im using doesn't have a tray to pull out to build it on so I was just building it in the case. Thanks for all your help.
