Building a System

My friend and I are building a pc and we have it partly planned out, I want to make sure everything is good and see if we are missing anything.

Asus A8V-Deluxe Via K8T800Pro Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX
Motherboard w/Wi-Fi@HOME, Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/SATA

AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 Processor Socket 939

ATI Radeon 9800 PRO AGP 8X 256MB DDR Video Card w/TV-Out & DVI

Sony DWU18ABK Internal DVD±RW Bare Drive (Black)

Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 512MB DDR333 PC2700 Memory

Thermaltake Gaming Tower XaserV WinGo V7420AU Full Tower Case

Western Digital Hard Drive 80 gb 7200 rpm (from old comp)

Thats what we have so far, we missing anything and is everything going to work.

dump the 256 9800pro. if you are spending that much on a CPU, you at least need a current GEN vid card.

pc2700??? jeese, you need at least pc-3200

case = barf. but to each his own...

He came up with that, I'm mostly just helping build it. As long as it works I'm happy, it's gonna be his anyway.

exactly how would you tell him to learn how to pick out better components? that's a pretty crappy thing to say.

It's really easy. People do this thing, called "research", before they go to the store and start picking things.

One way to start is by going to Google or Neoseeker and searching for reviews.

I guess we fly into a rage when we see an FX-53 paired with PC2700, a 256MB 9800PRO, and an old 80GB hard drive.

It's not like there aren't 100 similar thread a day, not to meantion the Guides on the main page....

Alright, kind of derailing this thread here... as if it could be derailed any more than it is now 🙂

Jpeyton,

Do you think that the Thermaltake HSF that you suggested to cool the 3200+ would fit in a standard mid-tower case? I am planning on building a system with a 3200+ and was looking to use this HSF, but from the reviews on Newegg I have found out that it's absolutely gigantic. Would I have problems fitting it into, say, this mid-tower case? I'm just worried that I'm going to buy the thing and it's not going to fit.

Thanks,

The guides on the main page are okay, but could be better.

Ariste, the heatsink should fit without an issue. I don't think any company makes a heatsink that is too tall for a standard ATX case; footprint, on the other hand, can be a concern, but the Thermaltake uses a small footprint with heatpipes so that isn't an issue either.
