Alright...I will be building a system this summer, and of course...I'm planning it way to early...hehe. I think that I'm going to start w/a barebones Duron 750/MSI K7T Pro-2 from Monarch Computer, and then follow it up w/128 or 256 megs of RAM (Which should I go with), a reletively small (non-Maxtor hd), a Radeon LE, and a Tosh 12x DVD. I'm trying to put together a damn cheap system, because I gots no money...and this is partially for my parents. I'll use it when I'm home this summer, but they want to use it when I'm at school. Anyway...I think I can figure out most of the stuff on my own, but I'm having a hell of a time picking out a monitor. I'd really like to go with something w/an FD Trinitron tube, but I'm having some trouble finding them cheap. Does anyone have any suggestions...and also, what kind of prices should I expect to see.

How much do you think a small system like this should cost?

Well, I can tell you straight up that the absolute best monitor out there is the ones I use.

My 19" DYNA FLAT goes to 1792X1344 @ 107KHz!!!!!

very VERY sweet, and it comes with a 5 year warranty for less than 400 bucks!!!!!!

W O W is all I can say about them!!!

buy the best possible monitor you can afford. it always pays off. since most people upgrade monitors about every 4 years, it balences out since you arent making upgrades every 6 months

I know that I should get the best that I can afford...hehe, that's kinda obvious...I'm asking about certain types.

And...maybe I didn't elaborate enough. CHEAP...not best for under 400. I would really like to build a sub 700 machine...but doing the math that way only leaves about 150-200 for a monitor max. Unless someone can help me cheap out the other stuff...that is all that I can afford. Are there any suggestions for that price range.

I was looking around at the Sony E100 15" monitor...and I could probably get it for 150-170...does that sound good at all??

Thanks for your help :)

Since your deadline is distant, keep an eye on hotdeals over the next couple months. You are bound to find something you really like for a sweet price. Some recent sweet deals included: 19" 982 for $130, 27" Gateway for $319, misc 17"s for <$100 after rebates, and my favorite: having Compaq pay you $25 to buy a 15" monitor at OM (or 17" free). You could nearly build a whole system for free after rebate if you pay attention long enough. I am addicted to that damn forum now ;)

If can't find any deals, then go for the Samsung 955df, best value IMHO. GREAT looking monitor and for only around $300 or less I think. Yeah, it's a 19" flat (well not true flat I think...)

It may be a good value, but 300 is way over my budget.

I know what you mean about being addicted to the forum, hell...I've been addicted for well over a year now. I'll keep my eyes open, and prolly by componants one at a time...but wait till may for the chip/mobo, because they should drop by then.

Thanks for the advice.

btw...what do you guys think about the barebones deals at monarchcomputer.com. I've only heard good things about them, and I'd be willing to pay a little premium for quality service and support. I configured a machine with an Enlight Hourglass (300 watt ps) case, an MSI K7T Pro (have one in my main machine and love it), and a Duron 750. The price ended up being around 320. Is that a bad deal for all that I get...because I would prefer buying the Case/Mobo/CPU pre-assembled together.

Alright...thanks for the help again!

Consider the Samsung 753/755DF, those are both under $200(I believe), flat screen 0.20mm horizontal dot pitch, both great monitors.

There's a rebate on the 753 now too...but only until March 31. Dammit I wish I had some dough.

Check out the KDS AV-7TF from multiwave It is a 17" flat screen with a Trinitron tube. I have had one for a year or so and really like it. It is close to your budget at $198 plus shipping. KDS also has a good 3 year warranty and is prompt to replace any problem monitor.
