Building a "smart" server

I'm leaning towards an EPIA based server for cost, electrical, and noise. (I'd be getting one of their fanless varieties) However, since I don't want to take any risks with this data (it will be in RAID 1), I also want to know when and if a drive is failing or has failed. I know that industrial grade servers are configured to email system administrators when drives, fans, or even power supplies fail or are nearing failure, and would like to do the same on my server. If I went with an EPIA, I'm wondering what kind of hardware/software needs to be in place to detect harddrive failures.

The other option is to go with a Pentium M, in which case I'd like to know about what needs to be done in order to detect and alert me of fan AND harddive failures via email.
