There are lots of them. An automotive engine is a piston pump, so is the compressor in a frige or freezer. Be a bit more specific.

mosdef, hmm if all you are acheiving is a head(rise in elevation) of 7-8 feet then there are much better ways of pumping water than a piston pump. Each pump has it's own unique characteristics... piston pumps are good for developing very high pressure, but is very complicated, has high maintinance costs and is very inefficient. A head of 7-8 feet can be acheived by a centerfuge pump, or a hybred centerfuge/axial pump (like turbocharger impellers). And it will acheive it with less moving parts, more efficiency and better dependebility. Go to a local university and go to the enginering library and look up pumps. You will find a wealth of information that will help you in your quest. Another thing you could do is look up the California Aquaduct system on the web. The system has to pump water from the san juaqin valley floor over the san bernadino mountains in one single lift (1500ft+ lift (guess)) They use huge 2 stage centerfuge pumps. Good luck on your quest... by the way... what are you moving? and in what amounts? you might be able to just buy a commercial pump to acheive your goals and save yourself development costs.
