building a PCHT...

for PVR and surround purposes. i already got the dru500a...what vid card? or should i just get a tv tuner card?

should i go dually for this system? or will a 2ghz+ cpu be efficient enough to handle video streaming?

i already know i'm raiding 2 200gb drives together in this baby

should i go audigy 2 or TBSC?

and finally, i already know i'm getting the klipsch 5.1's

I'd buy a receiver and at least an Energy 5.1 speaker system before spending the extra on a dually. Klipsch PC speakers are fine for gaming, but a little weak for home theater.

you think so? i mean, its not like i'm gonna be CRANKING this thing...just for regular normal surround sound listening. by the way, any way to swap out the subwoofer on the klipsch's with a JBL powered sub?

since this is a home theater oriented computer, i'm gonna have to say get the M-Audio Revolution. Arguably the best HT sound card out rite now.

take 5.2s are ok. better than the klipsch at least.

How do you plan on getting the video into your computer? If you plan on making a PVR, that's the most important component in the whole system.

I'd recommend a cheap receiver and entry level speakers as well, over those. If that isn't an option, I'd recommend the Creative MegaWorks THX 5.1 550 over the Klipsch. The Megaworks are cheaper, and sound better to me.

I'd lose the Klipsch 5.1's and get a Dolby Digital receiver + Energy Take5.2 surround speakers. The Klipsch 5.1's are great for personal use up close like PC's, but the Take5.2's will be better suited for HT use and be able to fill a room better soundwise. Also if your TV is HD ready, I highly recommend using a VGA to Component adapter. Picture quality will be much improved.

As far as the speakers go, if you plan on sitting right in front of it like you would normally when using a comp get the Klipsch ProMedias. If you plan on hooking this up to a TV and not sitting right in front get some real speakers and a reciever. Its definetly worth it. For sub $600 you can get a decent little set from Energy, Klipsch or PSB. Speakers like the ProMedias are great for computer stuff (I own some) but when compared to real speakers fall very short. That goes for pretty much all computer speakers. They are designed for near-feild listening.

simple answer, yes. do you want to? prolly not. all the channels go thru the plate amp that's on the sub, and just to change that out, you would need to open up the amp and rewire it so you can get a unpowered signal to the powered jbl. i wouldn't recommend doing it unless your good with electonices and electricity.


also, like mentioned before, if you will be sitting at comp to view stuff, ya, comp speakers will work, but if you will be 5-12 feet from it, go with bookshelf speakers at the very least, comp speakers won't hold any weight. if you want help with home audio, i would suggest Soundillusion.net's home audio section (excellent site, very friendly and very knowledgable), or hometheater.com (very knowledgable, was a lil too techinical for me at first).
