building a pc

My friend is putting together a new rig. He bought these parts and am wondering if it is a good choice so far. MSI KT600 Motherboard 2/Lan, SATA, AMD XP3000 Processor. This is all the parts he has so far. He didnt list much to go by, but I can get more info from him. Is this an ok mobo for this processor, and what type of power supply would be recommended? And if anyone can list all the goodies to build this? He is going to use it for gaming, but I dont think he wants to spend too much. Thanks =)

instead of buying the xp3000+, go for the 2500+ and then just change the fsb in the bios to 400. then u will have a normal 3200+. by doing that, he will save over $100.

It really depends on if he already bought those others and if they can be returned. He would get much better performance for much less money with and NF2 Ultra board and a 2500+ (then overclock) then he will out of the current combo. As far as psu, get a good name brand 350w from Antec, Enermax, and that should be fine with some room to upgrade in the future. As far as other parts, it really depends alot on what not much money is, and what he has to begin with.

Thankyou for all the info. I am not sure where he purchased the items, and if he could return them or not. I will mention that to him about getting the smaller 2500 and all. However I did tell him to get the antec power supply, only i mentioned the true blue 480 w. I think the smaller one you mentioned would be better for what he has in mind, and alot cheaper. I will mention the 350 w. to him also. Thanks again!

can the KT6 mobo even support an XP3000?

good choice on the MSI, though. I recently upgraded to a Chaintech, but used nothing but MSI before that 🙂

Yes.
I'd try to go for an nForce2 board, but I haven't used a KT600, so I'll withhold judgement. Make sure he gets quality RAM and a good PSU as mentioned before (Antec, Enermax, Fortron).

I was wondering the same thing about the mobo also. I am going to have to give him the link to these forums, I never even thought of that till now ***rolls eyes***. Hopefully he got the right combintation. I did mention to him to get the best RAM availible.

Best ram available will run him about $1000 for a gig. He just needs pc3200 from a quality company like Mushkin, Crucial or Kingston.

Ok here is everything he has so far. Any suggestions on what should be changed? Thanks =)

MSI KT600 Motherboard w/lan, SATA
Amd Xp3000 Retail
512 PC3200 400Mhz Lifetime Apacer
512 mb PC3200 400Mhz Lifetime Apacer which I had him
price a 80 gig cause that one was alot of smack

Do you mean apacer brand with lifetime warranty? Should have gone with mushkin or the brands listed above.

Um... what? I will assume that means an 80gb SATA hd.

Again... what? Geforce 4 64mb? Is that an MX420, 440? Is it 64mb or 128mb? If it's an MX, it's not very good for gaming. Go with a Ti or other high end graphics card, if you want gaming abilities.
