Is there any need to remove the thermal pad on retail P4 CPU's? I ordered a 2.4Ghz that should get here Monday not sure whats in the box. But I am asumeing a heatsink with a thermal pad on it. I won't be overclocking so do I really need compound? Also all 3 power connectors need to be installed if the mobo supports them right? Or at least the ones it does support.

I did not remove my thermal pad on my heatsink (retail) and its nicely overclocking at a decent temperature. Its nice to have it on there. I tried removing it on my dead cpu and it didn't help that much. My temps were about the same. I'd save yourself the trouble and leave it.

it should coinnect to the mobo. It allows for fan monitoring.

You can overclock with the thermal pad left on. I am o/c P4 1.6a to 2.4Ghz with thermal pad. Antec pc case, Idle temp=28-29 degrees celsuis, after 1 hour Unreal Tournament, temp=34-36 degrees celsuis.

Thermal pad works very well with stock HSF which comes with P4's.
