Hi, got a friend who is hoping to get a new rig for Xmas for himself. Need suggestions on a good setup that fits the following criteria:
1) 1K budget, already got monitor/bk/mouse etc. just need the box
2) for media, video, audio, graphics encoding//processing work
3) overclocking is no problem since I'm building it for him.

please drop some suggestions for the best rig for the money. Tanks all!

What kind of media work is he doing? If it's CAD etc. he'll need focus on graphics. However if its mere video editing he'll just want a card that does h.264 decode and put more budget on the processor for the reencoding/transcoding.

Mid range P35 board $120
Q6600 $280
2gig ddr2-800 $80 (newegg has corsair for $48 AR)
Corsair 520hx PS $120
300-500gb HD $100
8800GT $250
DVDrw $30

Throw in a budget case of your choice and with shipping it will be a little over the budget,
but would pretty much cover all the bases except for a good aftermarket HSF if you want to overclock

yes he's doing xvid/h264 encoding, plus decoding. Also bunch media editing stuff, adobe premier for video, phtoshop and audio editing. Mostly for movies. no CAD, he's not an engineer just do video editing/playing.

yes, I was thinking along the same lines. But I started with a cheapo setup that's OCable:
that abit P35-E board - $100 or lower
E4xxx/E21xx - $100 or Q6600 for $260
ACfreezer pro - $25
2gig RAM $100
nice PSU - $100
2600HD - $100 (h264 decoding)
2x500GB in raid ( I think he needs lots space for video editing) - $250
rest case, DVD-ROM etc.

8800GT for sure, has h264 decoding on it and is a much more powerful card so you can get away with the lower end CPU. The HD2600 is still going to put a big demand on the CPU especially a low end E4xxx or E21xx.

I have done a bit of audio recording and editing, and I have always preferred seperate OS and data drives.

Is the new 8800GT that much better in decoding? I didn't realize it has a much better H264 decoder, thought just a more powerful g-card side and a rehashed h264 decoder. I need to check this one out. thanks for pointing it out.
