sold my rig 7 months ago. now ready to build something decent.

3 options

1) get a e6750 possibly with a mild overclock, and be content with it.

2) get a e2140 or one of it's ilk, overclock like mad, then sell it if/when i desire a penryn

3) hold off all together for a couple months and get a penryn, quad core, or cheaper conroe then

honestly, i'm not even sure about the quad core. The most intensive use will be gaming, and i just don't think quad performance justifies the price premium.

help, all of the awesome recent titles are making me antsy, but i can wait a few more months if it's worth it.

mix of two and three. Get something with a 1333 or 1600mhz fsb, and throw in a 2140. When penryn become more mainstream just replace. The mobo will be good, and you won't find yourself asking this question in regards to yet-to-be released products.

If you want to save money in the long run, you can just get an E2140 now, overclock its fanny off, then get a penryn or whatnot later. Its basically a matter of saving money...and how patient you are. lol

you probably DO want to go with a 1333/1600 mhz fsb. Probably an X38 supported motherboard to for some small amount of compatibility with future stuff.

Abit IP35 + e2180 + Kingston 2x1GB DDR2 at Mwave for $230 (after $25MIR)

This should give you an easy OC to around 3GHz on stock cooling which is plenty of power for games today. Late next year pick up a Penryn quad (if you need it) when prices are favorable. Throw the $100+ you save by going low end cpu into a better GPU which makes more difference for gaming anyway.
