Hello guys, this is my first time to venture into any other forum here besides ATOT, so go easy on me,

I have $300 to spend and i need to upgrade this thing:

I have this currently:

Motherboard: Socket 370 PGA
Celeron 1.6GHZ CPU
512mb of SDram
ATI Radeon 9200

I can carry my new hard drive and all that other stuff over, just need a CPU, Mobo and Ram. I have heard that Intel is far more stable than AMD, so I'm leaning towards Intel at the moment. But, i would probably have to go with a slower Pentium IV to make the price point. I am a unemployed student, so i cant go over $300. Can you guys help me with what to get? I am not tottaly shutting out the idea for AMD... your comments are welcomed.

Edit:

Do exactly what BW86 said... after a couple minutes of research, he's exactly right...

AMD > Intel...

I don't recall any P3 celerons faster than the 1.4 so I assume yours is overclocked (1.2 at 133 FSB?).

That's actually a pretty fast processor: for intel, you'd need at least a 2 GHz P4 (or much faster P4 celeron) to see any noticeable speed increase, or for AMD an XP 2000+.

Are you planning to overclock?

oh, too true, too true ... /pulls up own chair, asks for beer, offers chips

for the $ i'd go amd - you can get a major deal on an athlon xp running at ~2Ghz.

This must be like the 10th person who mistakenly thinks Intel is "more stable" than AMD.

I vote for a fricken sticky.

No offense to the OP. :)
