building a new pc, ,processor questions

Sup everyone, ,I am interested in building another computer, but lately all these deals from dell aren't making it worth building a P4 system is it? Should I hang in there for the next dell deal?

How have the ahtlons been? Are they still on top? I remember that they were 400mhz slower then the p4 counter parts but faster then them,, is it still like that? Are they still cheaper then intl?

Also, ,I hve been looking at anandtech's benchmarks and see that 1.4ghz gets around ~60fps in some game while the 2.8ghz gets around 120 in that same game. I don't understand,

the 1.4=60fps
the 2.8=120fps

exactly twice as much, this would seem reasonable since the processor speed is also twicec that then the 1.4, but what about all the supporting system hardware that is the same in both the systems, shouldn't the 2.8 only be 50% faster than the 1.4, not 100% faster sincee other components weren't upgraded, what's up with these benhmarks, anyone get what i'm trying to get across, because even i'm not sure anymore 😕😕

the athlon xps are not at the top but they still do provide the best price/performance ratio.(at the low end part)
the chips are similarly priced with intel's offering starting from the athlon xp2400+ but overall they're still cheaper

as for your question, the p4 is a bandwidth hungry architecture.
when intel decided to make the jump to 533mhz fsb, their performance improved considerably

If you use the same video card of course a faster CPU will give faster results. Most Video is held up by the CPU so a faster CPU feeds the Video more.
