Building a new PC from scratch...

Ive been thinking of making a new PC (without monitor/keyboard/mouse), however, with the new Socket 940s is it worth it? I could wait that extra year but I am on a limited budget (1,500 US) and it might not be worth the wait seeing that the new AMD mobo/processor combinations will be a little out of range. Another reason for me waiting would be the damn video card cycles. I was screwed when I bought the RADEON 9800 card right before the new x800s came out. That easily threw $100 down the drain. From experience, I would think the next batch of video cards would be released Q2-3 of next year (coincidently at the same time the new Socket 940s come on to market).

Should I upgrade this winter or wait until next spring?

Also, are SilenX products good, durable, etc.?

Ah the never ending cycle of wait till the next big release. I'm sure you've heard the age old, if you keep seeing something on the horizon and keep waiting 6 months you'll never get anything. But I think this is a good time to buy because look at it this way, is socket 940 going to be that big a difference over 939? I mean 1 more pin can't carry THAT much more data can it? On the other hand I don't know what other changes will be made so hopefully someone will come along and tell us a bit more about it but might be speculation at this point what 940 will do.

Socket 940 are for server Opterons. Do you mean M2? Because i think that is being released Q4 of 2006

How many pins is M2 going to have? (just out of curiosity)

I'd say now is bad for an upgrade, just because the new console generation is just starting, and most games from now on will be based on these consoles, thus you'll want hardware significantly more powerful to have a good PC gaming experience.

That, and 2GB-4GB of ram will probably be standard in the near future...and it's going to be far more affordable to wait for DDR2 than to try and get that much ram with DDR. DDR probably won't get significantly cheaper than it is now, while DDR2 prices will keep dropping.

If you can survive w/ what you have then wait.

You just want to upgrade, it is not necessary.

I'd say start building it once M2 is available... (and maybe delay slightly to let the kinks get worked out, or if something really promising is coming, but I say just wait for M2 to get DDR2 and cheap memory prices, along with cheap dual cores)

Answer: there is NO best time to put one together. Figure out a budget, realize that whatever you buy will be cheaper and practically obsolete in a couple of years, and order some goodies from Newegg.

I wouldn't wait until the M2, it's going to be quite sometime until their release. $1500 is a goo budget to work with, you can build a machine that you should easily be able to get 2 years of use out of the machine before it gets horribly outdated. I built an awesome machine about 2 months back and spent under $1500.

When you go to build the machine ask yourself what you are going to be using it for the most, then shape the machine around what your usage needs are.

For me the real question was, "Am I happy with what I have now?" The answer was a definite "No" so I pulled the trigger.
