Building a new PC for $1200

You might want to hurry up and cancel that order.

If capacity isn't an issue at least get the 320GB Spinpoint F4. It'll blow away the Caviar Blue and it's $2 cheaper.
 
Eek, the harddrives are such a poor choice: Black for speed/OS, Green for storage/low power.

And what's with the hexacore 1090T? If you wanted to overclock six cores, then there is the cheaper 1055T. But why six cores? And you already had the option of a build with superb overclocking Intel i5 / i7 processors...
 
@DominionSeraph, i will go to the local computer store and check for the specs you have listed. i will print out the specs and take them to the stores.

Regarding the MOtherboard, can you suggest a similar board by other manufacturer, MSI etc. I think it would be hard to find the motherboard you listed.

Unfortunately I am not very good with motherboards. Basically what I do is go to Newegg, pick the right socket, filter in order of price, then start clicking through one by one until I find one that has everything I want.
But if you're going with GTX 460 SLI you'll want one that says SLI. Any 1156 SLI board should do you just fine.

ill see if the budget permits for an SLI motherboard and 2 SLI cards, then ill go for it.

by 2 SLI cards, it means 2 of nVidia 460's, am i right ?

I am not an experienced PC guy for what thats worth.

I went with the 1090 because I don't realy want to OC it. But my brother was saying that the "black" series were better for OC'ing

Honestly I didn't do to much looking into HD. But thanks for your suggestion and I will deffinately do that and get the 320G

Originally i was going to go with the 1055T but I decided I don't realy know enough about OC'ing so I went with the 1090T for the 3.2 Ghz. The only reason for 6 cores was to have an up to date CPU.

I didn't go with Intel because it cost a little more here and there and adds up. Mainly I was told that I had to go with the newer Intel MB for good SLI and I wanted 16/16 without having to "hack" a MB to make it work better for SLI. The newer board cost around $200 and then it seeems you should get the i9 CPU to take advantage and then the price just gets to high.

But I have no significant reason for choosing AMD.

The one thing you want to check is if the PCI slots will run 16/16 in SLI. Some boards say SLI but only run 8/8.

The "black edition" are "better" for overclocking only because it has an unlocked multiplier, not because it actually has a higher overclocking ceiling than the non-black edition CPUs. IMO, it's not worth the price premium.

Many games don't even make use of 4 cores, and I can't think of a single game that makes use of more than 4 cores. I'm also not expecting games to make use of more than 4 cores anytime soon - it's hard enough to code a game that uses 4 threads effectively.

For the price of the 1090T, going with an i5-760 + P55 setup shouldn't be much more expensive, if at all, and you'd see better gaming performance with the i5-760.

Thats some great info... I had no idea it was only a 1% improvement. My brain saw 16x/16x as "twice" as good. Only if I had posted my build before I hit "purchase" I may have changed it to an i5-760.

But.. it is what I am stuck with now. I don't think it will be a "bad" build overall. Probably could of been better but... It will be a big upgrade from my current AMD 64 x2 dual core 3800+(2.0 ghz) and 2 gigs of Mem and nvidia Geforce 8500 GT

This would be the INTEL SLI set up I would of bought if I checked out this forum first. This has everything component wise that I had in my AMD SLI set up that I actually purchased. The only difference is it has an aftermarket CPU cooler if you decide to overlock the intel set up.

The intel set up here with shipping is $1346.

My AMD price (- 3rd party CPU fan) was $1297.

Not a whole lot of difference. I got a discount on the video cards (black friday)with the AMD set up ...and the 3rd party fan boosted the intel price.
 
^^ i5-760 is the replacement for the original i5-750. Standard recommedation is the i5-760, but you will be fine with an i5-750 if you find it cheaper on a clearance deal!
