Building a new PC but it wont boot up!! - Solved: Bad MoBo

I'm building a new system with the Soyo Fire Dragon mobo, 256 DDR 1.6 P4, Xtasy Video card (nvidia gforce2 - 64mb), and 320W Power supply.

Once I installed everything, I tried booting up but nothing came up on my monitor. At first I thought it was the video card or monitor so I replaced it and it still didnt boot up.
I think noticed the speaker wasn't plugged in. I booted it back up and there were no beeps. I removed everything except the cpu and speaker but there still isn't any beeps. The mobo can't be shorted cuz its sitting on the desk, not in my case.

Do you think I need a new mobo or cpu?

-Another weird thing is that I am unable to start the pc without switching the power supply off then on and then pressing the power button. Would that be a power supply issue ?

if this is your first time booting up...
and your mobo has never been booted up before...
then check your jumper settings.

especially ones that control your cmos.

then, check your memory.

reseat it.
if you have more than one memory seated... then place only one.
if that doesn't work...
try different slots.

i'm inclined to think that it's your jumper setting though.

wait...
so tell us exactly what happens when you press that power button.

does the cpu hsf turn?
does your hd run?

and what comes up on the screan?

does it post? at all?

Ok, I just took out the Lithium for a few seconds, reseated it, cleared the CMOS, and booted it up. This time I got a long continuous beep over and over again. When I do boot up, the hsf does turn. The hd is not connected to the system right now, its just the mobo, video, and memory.

Nothing comes up on the screen so it doesn't post. To boot the system up, I have to clear the CMOS each time and them I get the continuous long beeps.

If I do not clear the CMOS, when I try to boot I do not get any beeps, but the hsf turns.

check your RAM make sure it is good and make sure it is in the proper DIMM slots (check the manual) make sure it is seated right and clicks

I checked the memory and it is in DIMM1. I reseated it just in case. After clearing the CMOS again I tried booting and I get the same response - none except a continuous long beep lasting about three seconds over and over again.

And when I do plug in the hd, it does turn but the machine still does not post - nothing shows up on the screen.

this is what i gathered from soyo's website.
you said long continuous beep... could it be 4?

System beeps, but nothing on the monitor
Please check the following beeps code.

1. continuously intermittent beeps - memory not seated properly or incompatible.
2. One beeps follow by 3 beeps system power down - Cpu Fan no connected to Fan connector; memory not compatible. ; If this is a P4 board then the cpu could be bad or not installed correctly or wrong power supply( required P4 Power supply).
3. One long and 2 shorts beeps - Video card not seated properly ( you need to push it very hard); bad video card.
4. One beeps - monitor is not connected or faulty.

The continuous beeps just keep going and going... I would shut it off after about 15 or so.. it got irritating. I know the memory is seated correctly the only other possible explanation would be that I was sold a bad stick. I might have to go out and buy a new one unless I can think of another way to fix this.

Couple of questions how many sticks of RAM you got in the machine?
What size is each stick?

Okay what you should try and works is to take the video card and the memory out and clear the cmos and tell me how many beeps you get. You should get 3 because that is the beep code for having no memory in the MBD. If it gives you 2 beeps just put in the memory and clear cmos again then try it. That should give you 3 beeps then put in the vide card and let me know what happens...

I have one 256mb DDR

I took everything out and I still got the long beep (close to 4 sec.) that keeps repeating itself until I shut it off. This happened when there was no memory/no video. I can only get that repeating long tone from the machine, no matter what I do. I'm starting to think it may be a bad processor, but I don't have the code for that.

Try this No screen and no beep, which means your CPU and motherboard did not work at all. It could be that the CPU is not seated correctly or the m/b component is grounded with the case. To isolate the problem, double-check jumpers setting and remove all the add-on cards, unplug all the hard disk and floppy cables and see if you can hear some beeps. If you still do not get any beeps, then try putting the motherboard on the table (or isolate from the case) with CPU and speaker only, and take one more try. Also Pentium is really new to the market with there DDR boards I would go with AMD if you are going for DDR ram... Of course I am a DDR man

Ok, I went back to Fry's last night at exchanged the mobo. Installed it today and I got it to POST. I guess it was just a bad mobo. When I talked to the service guy there he also said that the SOYO Fire Dragon has a problem with memory. It does not seem to like generic brands, which is what I have.

Thanks for all the help! If I have any more problems you'll be hearing from me again soon.
