Guys, I need your help / expert advise for a machine for SoHo.
- Specs: 2 TB HDD, 64 GB RAM, 2 NICs, 8 cores CPU.
- I'm open to either buying or assembling it myself.

I've tried to answer to most of the questions that are deemed necessary by this forum below

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

For running VMware Workstation images. VMs running Linux/Windows.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

~ 100k INR

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

India/Mumbai/Pune

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.

I'm doing this for the 1st time so not quite sure which ones are the best..

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Intel or AMD

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

Nope

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Default

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?

1920 x 1200

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Couple of months

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?

Nope.

Please excuse me if there are missing info in the post :).

100K INR is about $1800 US. The cheapest 8-core CPU is about $1100. 64GB of registered ECC RAM is about $500. $300 is not enough for the rest of the machine, so you will have to scale back your desires or increase your budget.

Also, a single 2TB HDD is completely and totally inadequate for any VM workload that could make use of 8 cores and 64GB of RAM.

Yeah, that's more like SSD array territory.

He could maybe get away with using Opterons. A dual G34 mainboard and a pair of Opteron 6320s is about $1000USD. That would give you 16 "cores" as AMD markets them.

Good call, though that's still $1500 for CPUs, mobo, and RAM, leaving $300 for storage. This config needs at least a reasonable RAID 10 array, SSDs would be even better of course.
