Building a new computer. HELP!

I'm going to build a new computer soon, but I haven't built one since 1999. I didn't do a very good job with the case or the cooling as the computer's pretty loud.

So, I'm trying to do a better job this time. I'm probably going to build an AMD 2100+ with the ASUS nForce2 mobo. I have some older parts that I'm going to put into it, but I need a case!

I don't really want to spend a whole lot, hopefully under $100 or so. I never knew how much cases cost since I bought the last one when I didn't really know anything. I don't need a lot of bays, since I only plan on having 2 HDs and 2 CD/DVD Drives and a 3 1/2" Disk Drive.

What do you suggest?

OH! Since this is also the cooling forum too, what kind of heatsink/fan combo should I use? I don't really plan on overclocking, but who knows about the future...

Here is a nice Chieftech for $42.00 also Antec are good for the price but a little higher then the Chieftech. The Lanboy is ok but their not that good for airflow with only 1 small exhaust outlet.

WaTaGuMp, you don't think that the Lanboy will keep it's cool? Granted it only has 1 80mm at the rear, but coupled with another 80mm in front and the quality Smart Power Blue 350W PSU is should keep a good airflow going. One big point is that its an aluminum case which should greatly decrease the case interior temps.

No, AL won't affect it that much. Think about it, with good case ventilation the case shouldn't absorb more than a few degrees of heat. And plus, a box is not very good hs design. So will AL lower your case temps, probably. Will it make a big difference, nope.

epoxy,

i just built a computer with almost similar stuff(still in the process of building). I have
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MoBo
AMD 2100+ XP Processor OEM
PNY 2 256MB DDR266 (aka DDR333) RAM
XFX Ti4200 64MB Graphics Card
Cendyne DVD-ROM/CD Writer 32X
Liteon DVD ROM 16X
Floppy Drive
WD 80GB JBRTL
Alpha 8045 Heatsink (with Mechtronics Fan)

I have bought a Antec 660AMG for 80 bucks (case alone).
The one thing I observed is 660AMG is not that big and right now its silent really silent. But I am planning to put couple more fans and I will know how different it will be then. I have bought NMB fans, so I will use them later.

Right now the temperatures are from 32 - 36 initial period and they are going up to 40 when I am running SETI or continously after 6 hours or so. But I am still tweaking this and I want to see temperatures of mid 30's before I start ocing this machine.

Thanks for the info sunnyoc, please keep me informed about your case and how it sounds...

I've actually been looking at a couple of those cases with windows in them... They look cool, but i'm not sure how practical it is.

Oh and SETI is that Distributed Computing thing, right?
