This PSU would be good

 for everything but the memory.
try this
guranteed cas2 timings for same price. g.skill is a pretty reputable brand btw.

also, i'm guessing either
A) your friend is too lazy to even build his own pc(see below)
or
b) is not knoledgeable to do it himslef(pretty technically sufficent does not mean you know enough to oc well. ocing is a delicate, time consumng process that takes a lot of knowledge and patience to get a safe, stable oc. next time ask him about agp locks, vcore, htt/fsb, mem divider, and sata lock, etc and if he draws a blank face, buy him a hp or dell, drop in a new power supply and vidoe card and be done with it.)
or
c) dosent have enough time(see above)

in this case recommend the msi nforce4 ultra mobo. it is more stable, dosent have the compatibility problems and though dosent let you have insaine volts on the components, this should be seen as a bonus just in case your friend tries to push volts up too far(dfi lets 3.1 on ram, msi lets 2.85 so it's harder to burn out components).

the value vx will easily get 2-2-2 timings on the dfi board with alittle voltage. that memory is a great deal for overclocking. if not planning on overclocking the g.skill is another good option.

i would just stick with the retail heatsink unless overclocking, that powersupply is alittle overkill but its not a bad deal. if you wanted a quieter one seasonic is a good option. otherwise that build is a good recommendation

shoRunner, he is overclocking and that is why I suggested the XP-90. Also DFI now requires native 24-pin ATX molex & 480W for all the DFI N4 mobos. The Fortron meets these requirements and it really cheap thus I recommend it.

Actually, the latest BIOS for the msi neo4 platinum does allow 3.1v max, and still has the same great compatablity as before, thus why I recommend it for new OCers.

Nice recommendations akshayt, but I think that puts it about $120 over budget, give or take $20.

Get a cheap ass CRT and a 6600GT. That should put it in the budget.

Yeah, I wanted to recomment a good 17" crt so that he could get either 3200+/3500+ and still have enough for the x800xl, but alas, his brain has been washed by all the LCD hype.

hey lyfer, like the sig, thats what was on comic book guy's shirt in the simpsons. my friend has one of those shirts...

instead of building it FOR him, you can build it WITH him, show him the ropes, then when it goes pear shaped maybe he can solve the problems for himself....oh and introduce him to US on AT!

For a good price/performance setup, go with an X800XL. Get a Venice core for overclocking.
