For your situation, sounds like your 9600Pro does NOT need to be upgraded.

Using linux, and you're going to stay with a 9600 Pro? It'll work, but Nvidia has far superior linux drivers.

Out of curiosity, why one of those little Lanparty boxes if you're not a gamer?

the dfi lanparty is a mobo rollo, but that's not the point...
you don't have to upgrade, my old ATi 9600pro has a dvi connector, so everything should be goot

You are also touting "sata ll". That would be "ii", or "II", not "ll" ("LL"). Jeez. The DFI board, as well as any board except the Intel ones with ICH6, cannot take advantage of any SATA II features. If you want those, you've gotta wait for nForce 4, which WILL require a video card upgrade.

Edit:

Looks like I'm wrong about the way you spelled it. The uppercase 'i' comes out serifed in my Quick Reply box.

Superior even for 2D? I though nV's advantage was in 3D speed, and perhaps stability.

The 2D drivers for both are open source. Or at least, open source versions exist for 2D. The 3D is the only real issue between the two, and if you're using Linux or FreeBSD nVidia is the only real choice. Especially given nVidia's supposed advantage in OpenGL, which is the 3D API one must use with non-Windows operating systems. That would render ATI's supposed D3D advantage one more reason to avoid them.

thanks for all the input, ops.
i thought i had read somewhere that nvidia was a better choice for linux and that was why i was thinking about upgrading the 9600pro.
