Building a NAS based off of Ubuntu or Suse

So, here i am installing either ubuntu or suse (latest builds) and it does the complete install. However, when it comes up after the install, all i am getting is the black screen. I dont get anything on the screen but black. it is throwing video at my monitor, because the screen is lit, but i get no graphics. Its really weird.

Is it because its an ATI 9800 Pro? It is a DX9 card, and ive read where the latest builds dont support that anymore.

Thoughts?

My guess is because of this: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:ATI_drivers
