What to do with that old computer? I have a decent gaming machine, but I also have an old computer and an extra mobo that I upgraded from and here's what I was thinking. I would take the extra SIS mobo and the old parts and try to throw together a box that I could play MP3's off of and surf the internet. I want to set this thing up in a different room so I won't have a monitor. I was thinking I would run it all through my home theater system. I could use the case and most of the other parts from my old setup with the newer mobo that I upgraded out of with my gaming box.
Anyone ever tried something like this. I'm not looking to make the computer into a home theater system or ultimate gaming setup, I already have a DVD - surround sound setup and gaming machine, I just want to use it as a multimedia component so I'm looking to go barebones functionality and cheap. So from what I can tell here's about all I need.
Socket A CPU - Was thinking Duron 1ghz for around $35-40.
Video Card with TV out - Something cheap < $30-45 preferably
Can you convert serial to S-video? My DVD player has S-video in which I might could substitute.
Switch or HUB to connect with my main box so I can share cable internet - ~$30
Already have case, 250mw powersupply, 4gb harddrive + 30gb in my other box to use as a server if needed, 32X CD, 288-320 mb PC100 ram (cant remember), 10/100 NIC, 4-channel sound card, keyboard, mouse, software, etc. Was thinking of spray painting my old case black to look cool, but that's really irrelavent.
So for under $100, I got a decent multimedia box hooked up to my home theater system right? Kinda like a web-tv setup, but with more umph. What am I leaving out? Any hardware suggestions or comments much appreciated.
