Building A Laptop

Hello, this is my first post to the Anandtech forums, and I have some questions about designing/building a laptop system.

Recently, I've started seriously considering purchasing a laptop for gaming and generally to replace my Desktop. Unfortunately, I've ran into a few snags. The primary issue is that no vendor seems to have the components I want integrated into a single system. One vendor might have Athlon 4 CPUs in their laptop, but they have a shoddy video card. Other systems have the video card I want (GeForce4 Go), but all their systems have Pentium 4 CPUs. No matter where I look, it seems to be an either/or issue, with no option to actually get the system I want.

That brings me to where I'm at now. I'd like to build my own laptop using the components I want so in the end I have exactly the system I want, just like I would if I was building a desktop. Can anyone point me in the direction of some good laptop building articles?

If there is a vendor out there that allows complete customization of a laptop, I'd also be interested if someone could post a link to their web site.

Thanks for your attention,
Jekler

What you want is not possible, mainly due to the extreme customizations each manufacturer has to take to meet space and heat concerns in building a laptop. Basically, there's no just no such thing as a "standard part" for laptops that can mixed and matched with others. You might want to search the forums a bit - this topic has come up a few times recently and was covered in some depth.

And, welcome to the forums...

Thanks for your answer.

I had searched the forums about building a laptop but nothing came up.

I'm sad to hear that laptops really aren't customizeable. I guess I'll stick with another desktop, I really don't want a laptop if I have to sacrifice one thing for another.

Thanks again for your help,

that alienware notebook isn't any more customizable than your average dell. and its using a desktop processor, which is gonna kill battery life.

The one says it uses the P3-M. The other is a P4 though, desktop I guess.

You can swap Video cards on a Dell Laptop... some have upgraded the processors as well.. you just can't go much farther than that.

I don't see what is so wrong with a P4 laptop... don't they take less power than an AMD Laptop? The speed difference between the two is probably neglible both ways. I am not sure about the AMD laptops, but many P4 laptops are even using DDR Ram now. The P4 based GeForce4 laptops score well over 5,000 in 3dmark.
