Building a gaming PC now, good or bad idea?

they had a deal at frys if you bought amd + mobo you get 10% off purchase

For $1000 you can get a i5-760, atx motherboard, dvd/cd, 1tb spinpoint f3, 4gb ddr3 1333, gtx 460 1gb, 500 watt psu, haf 912 case, windows 7, and a 23" monitor.

This build really isn't even a fair comparison because the OP didn't buy a monitor or Windows license! So really, he could have gotten an even better build.

For example, that $300 would have gone towards getting a GTX 570 and 650W PSU which would of course stomp his 6870. Not to mention that the i5 760 is a much better gaming processor because of it's single-threaded performance.

I know man, this was just a build i had done yesterday in the 1k range and it shows OP what he could have gotten instead, of course if he didn't need a monitor or an OS then he has a lot more to play with

So i built the system but theres a couple problems the mobo came broken so i have to return/exchange it.

when ever im gaming and try to plug something into the front USB or headphone/mic jack the system completely locks up.

The instructions also told me to put the ram in matching colored slots but when i tried it wouldnt even post not even a signal to my monitor, so after trying both ram sticks in black slots and then both in blue slots i just put one into the blue and one into the black, and it booted perfectly, weird?

might swap the video card for a hd6950 also because they just dropped in price.

other then the faulty USB and headphone jacks everything is perfect. I was playing bad company 2 earlier and it ran like butter.

so what do you guys think I should do. this time i promise ill listen to you guys

I kinda got it figured out except the video card, im still stuck on crossfire but I was looking at compatibility issues and a single card is looking more sexy now, especially when I saw how the 6870 did on crysis in 1080p, i can just imagine what a higher end card could do.

If you can exchange your stuff for different parts, grab an i5 760 and a GA-P55A-UD3. That should leave a bit of money left over to exchange the 6870 for a GTX 570.

so i went back to frys and returned the mobo, they kept saying the mobo was good and that my case was causing my computer to freeze.

I only picked up the processor, going back for the GPU and mobo tomorrow so im not tempted to spend all night using it, my girl is getting jealous

Well...they COULD have been right about the case. All it takes is one stand off that hits one of the motherboard traces...and you have problem after problem...

so i went back to frys and made them price match the i5 for 169.99, i bought it yesterday for 209.

then i picked up the gtx570 FTW edition and they price matched it to a regular gtx 570 that was on amazon so it cost 349.49 and the mobo they didnt have so i picked up the msi p55-gd65 for 149.99(let me know about this one)

total for those 3 was around ~740. but my friend works there so an additional 10% from that so it came out to like 665 and some change

While you are right that we don't have a crystal ball that can accurately predict whether or not the OP will buy a second card, but statistics say that it is not terribly likely. Interests and cash flow are always subject to unexpected changes.



Possible, yes. Optimal, probably not.

Even if you can get SLI/CFX-capable PSUs and mobos at a good price, they are still going to be more expensive than non-SLI/CFX capable PSUs and mobos. With the density of GPU choices in the $200-$400 range, the money is IMHO far better spent on getting better performance today as opposed to the off chance that the OP may buy a 2nd GPU later on.

yeah, except for the PSU.

Most good(~100USD) PSU's are all capable and cert'd for sli/xfire.
