Building A Future proof System, Please help

well its for my company, and normally when i upgrade my personal system, i wait till there is a ssytem 4 times the cpu speed before i upgrade, so i would go from a 500 mhz, to a 2ghz, then to a 8ghz, then 32 ghz and so on.

Wait till the Nforce 2 Ultra motherboards come out with support for the 400fsb AMD Processer. Get new 400fsb processer. Forge the PC2700 and get PC3200 instead.

Why would you WASTE a cd copying a 1.1mb or 700kb file which you can put on a floppy pretty dumb.

Their processing power is definitely in a class by itself.

Perhaps in the same class as a pooper scooper's ability to cut grass!

If the S Meter on my SWL rig was for sarcasm, you would be at 60 over buddy! 😛

If it's for your company, then I would just buy from Dell. Sorry to say it, but it's better to have them come and fix it when your on vacation than to have your boss call you up and tell you they need you.

At the very least one computer shouldn't be doing all of that at the same time. That's asking for trouble.

Dang, can't believe I had to wait that long for someone to comment... 😉 Well hey, when I see people saying they want a $25000 8-way Opteron for their desktop rig, can't help but think they're trying to troll us. 😉

dguy6789, on the off-chance that you are serious instead of just trying to be preposterous, let me point to a U.S. Navy battle group. They don't try to build one 1-mile-long ship that simultaneously performs the functions of an aircraft carrier, destroyer, cruiser, frigate and supply ship, now do they? Think about this 🙂 Build yourself a little file server. Build yourself a primary workstation. If you have the money for the licenses, build yourself a render farm with those 1U dual-Opteron systems too.

Budget for incremental upgrades. There is no such thing as a future proof system.

Future proof? Forget about it. Even the power supply is going to be changed in a few years. Maybe the MB format will be changed so day too and make even your case obsolete.

yea, like many others have said - you can't get a future proof PC. or not for more than one year maybe..

but I think that you can get a nice digital flat panel display.. that might not get changed right away. 🙂 and then get a nice PC, but not one that's overkill. you can go with a 875P mobo to make sure that you can easily upgrade the CPU.

what I'd get: 875P mobo, P4 2.4C (if there is such.. dunno), radeon 9700/9700pro, some DDR400 ram.. say 1GB. and a serial ATA disk, since SATA seems the way that storage is headed.
