Building a Dual Core

Right know I have P43.4 and I am thinking of building a dual-core. Not sure to go with Intel or Amd and which will give me most for my $$$. If possible I want to keep my memory , pci e graphics card.

Can I still keep my case or I need a new ps ???

I would go AMD. It should the same or less power then your current P4 system so the power supply should be ok.

Ther are plenty of PCIe AMD boards so no problem there.

The only problem is if your ram is DDR2. All amd systems are DDR1. But you can get a 1gig of DDR1 for around $100 now.

The new Dual Core Pentium D's (9xx) seem/are very performant, and they are cheaper than AMD X2's... If you can find a motherboard that's relatively cheap and supports it, then that would be your best bet IMHO... No need to spend $ 100 on regular DDR then as well...

Another big plus of the new Pentium D's is their huge overclocking potential... Look at this thread...

EDIT: Why consider Dual Core right now? Your P4 should still be largely up to the task... Better is to wait for AMD's Socket AM2 maybe (that one will have DDR2 support as well 😉)...

I have four AMD CPU's, so please don't start hating me because I, for once, advise an Intel... 😀 No, it appears these these new Dual Cores are really good... Now it's up to AMD to show what they got with AM2...

The reason? We're talking about near $ 300 costing CPU's, that's why... 😛 And because they are still quite new... AND because AMD is still superior gaming-wise... However, this new chip knows how to handle that too...

Do you have a link to this "NEW" Dual core of Intel, you talking about the 65nm one?
Yeah, was just talking about the Presler one on 65nm... 🙂 It appears to be a very good CPU... The price is also lower than a X2's...

I am have Antec 430 ps , lian li case. I would to keep my ram and video card, I am only looking to buy board and cpu. Not looking looking to spend tons of money on it also, whatever gimes me the best bang for my money. I am not going to overclock,

Then wait, by all means... AMD's future socket is nearly around... Prices on Socket 939 hardware will probably fall as well... IMHO the P4 3.4GHz should still largely suffice... Not?

Any idea when AM2 will be out , also isn't it better to wait atleast couple of months after the ew chipset is out. I am getting tired of hour glass on my p4 cann't wait to build a dual-core.
