Building a Computer

I've never built a computer before, so I need help. Right now, I'm just picking out the parts so I can get an idea of how everything works. My philosophy is "if you're going to build a computer, you might as well get top of the line".

Here's what I have so far
Motherboard
Processor
I want a case similar to this, (preferrably blue, with lots of lights and it looks cool), but from the reviews, there are way too many wires to hook up.
Also, I have no idea what kind of harddrive or ram to get. Can someone help me out here?

Also, what other things do I need (I have the keyboard, mouse, monitor)? I know that there's a lot of stuff that I'm missing, but I don't know what it is or what to get.

Thanks in advance for all of your help

You'll need Registered or Registered ECC memory modules for that motherboard, perhaps this.

Other things you're going to need or probably want:

Video card
Sound card?
Hard drive(s)
Optical drive(s), perhaps a CD-burner or DVD-burner?
Floppy drive
Snacks
Good-quality power supply
Case
Memory-card reader/writer
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Games!
Operating-System software
Office software
Antivirus software
Firewall software
Cable/DSL router if you will have broadband
Snacks
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) or at least a good surge supressor

What might help is if you describe the various things you'll use the system for. :)

hmmm well there are 2 versions of the AMD FX53.. one being socket 940. one being socket 939... the 940 uses the more expensive slower.. registered ram.. while the 939 uses non registered ram which is cheaper and better... picking the s939 you would need to pick another motherboard for it too.. and i would just get the amd64 3800+ same clock speed performs about the same as i've heard and cheaper than the FX 53 by 100$.. Text also newegg doesnt sell the s939 FX53 retail.. correct me if im wrong anyone..

EDIT: anandtech reviewed some of the processors as you can see the same clock speed in FX and A64 performs very very close to each other here is the link Text for that..

A sony 52 cd rom drive
samsung 16xdvd 52xcd drive/cd-rw combo...u might wanna get a dvd burner....some never use it, like me...

What kind of budget do you have for this?

I like Seagate HDD's....quiet and reliable
If you have the $ spring for an ATI Radeon 9800Pro Vid card 128MB is enough 256MB is overpriced

If you are buying a 940 FX-53, you may also want to consider a 940 Opteron 150. It's basically the same as the FX, but is quite a bit less expensive. The difference is that the FX-53 has the multiplier unlocked, so it is easier to overclock, and the Opteron Requies Registered, ECC RAM, while the FX-53 only needs Registered RAM.

As mentioned above, another option is to look into the Socket 939 options, where you'd be able to use either a 3800+ or an FX-53.

If you are going all out then you should definitley get an ATI X800pro or X800XT or Nvidia 6800GT or 6800 Ultra video card. Not sure how many of those are readily available yet, but they are the fastest cards you can get right now. The GT/Pro are similar and the XT/Ultra are similar (with the XT a bit faster in most cases). If this puts you over your budget, then definitely step down on the processor so you can afford one of these video cards. I believe the FX series a WAY overpriced for the marginal increase in performance over the standard A64 series, so I would sacrifice a bit on the processor to get a significant improvement (2X the speed) in the video card.

For hard drives you should get the Western Digital Raptor, 10,000 RPM 74GB SATA drive. It is the fastest SATA drive available at this time. You could get two and put them in RAID 0 for slightly better performance.

1GB PC3200 RAM (maybe PC3500 is you want to try overclocking the FSB).

I am fine with on-board audio, so I haven't been reading up on sound cards. Seems like AnandTech keeps recommending the SB Audigy series, so that may be a good place to start if you aren't happy with the on-board audio from the MB.

Now, with all this power I think you definitely need a monitor that can support 1600x1200 resolution, otherwise you are wasting you video card (assuming you are playing games). If not 1600x1200, then at least get one that can support 1280x1024. Remember, your monitor is your primary interface with the computer, so it's worth spending a bit of time going to stores to get one you really like.

I'd get a DVD+/-RW, and I think NuTech was the winner in the last AnandTech roundup. However, Plextor has recently come out with a 12X player, so that might be worth a look, although I believe it is $100 more than the NuTech.

These are my two favorite cases so far, but I like my cases understated, so they probably won't work for you:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-163-019&depa=1
Also, I really dislike drive bay doors (since I'm always swapping game CD's) so I personally don't consider otherwise good cases when they have a door.

Anyway, good luck, have fun, let us know how things turn out.

I'll be building my computer around Christmas, so I'm having fun anticipating now.

If you believe in spending ridiculous amounts of money on something "top of the line", get:
MB: IWill DK8N (or Tyan Thunder K8W if the IWill doesn't come out soon)
CPU: 2x Opteron 250
RAM: 4x 1GB
VGA: X800XT PE / 6800 Ultra Extreme or Quadro FX 4000, depending on what you're using it for (former: gaming, latter: professional stuff)
HDD: Some of those Fujitsu 15K SCSI drives which supposedly demolish everything else + a highend PCI-X controller card, dunno much about this though
Sound: Audigy 2 ZS (Platinum?), or the most expensive audiophile card you can find, and I trust they're plenty expensive if you look hard enough
Optical: Plextor 12x or 16x DVD+-RW, or the best you can get for SCSI, dunno what that is
Case: Lian-Li PC-V2000 or Coolermaster Stacker
PSU: Antec 550W (or whatever the biggest is)
LCD: 2x Dell 2001FP or Viewsonic VP201B/S

If you actually have the money for that and wouldn't mind spending it, then do so, and I salute you. Wouldn't be surprised if it's over $10K. Otherwise, get something more reasonable like:

MB: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
CPU: Athlon 64 3000+
RAM: 2x 512MB
VGA: X800XT PE / 6800GT
HDD: A Seagate 200GB (100GB platters, etc.), + a 74GB Raptor or two if you like that sort of thing
Sound: Audigy 2 ZS or M-Audio Revolution
Optical: NEC 8X DVD+-RW
Case: Lian-Li PC-V1000, Antec P160, or that blingbling case you mentioned, but anything can be made flashy with sufficient cold cathodes and LEDs
PSU: 400-500W Antec/Forton/etc.
LCD: Dell 2001FP or Viewsonic VP201B/S

That's pretty much every component at the line where you have to start spending a /lot/ more for incremental improvements, eg. an FX-53 costs 4x the 3000+ and is 20-30% faster.
