Building a computer soon question

Is 2011 the only socket that supports DDR4? I was looking at getting a i7 4790, but thought I would go DDR4. I can't seem to find a MOBO that supports the 1150 and DDR4. I think the i7 4790 doesn't support DDR4?

Skylake and it's new 1151 socket motherboards will support DDR4 if that's really what you want. The new cpu's and boards should arrive around August-September.

If you can wait, i'd recommend it. 🙂

DDR4 is too young to be widely available.

I'd wait until august and buy Skylake, or if I really had to, buy now and not care about DDR4 and spare the money, the situations in which it makes a difference aren't worth the price imho (I do only general purpose computing and some light gaming...).

It's been theorized that some Skylake boards may support both DDR3 & DDR4.
But: that remains to be seen.

Technically even LGA2011 chips have a DDR3 memory controller, but it is disabled on all but a few Xeon SKUs.

OP, I'm not sure why you would specifically want DDR4 right now. It's more expensive than DDR3 and it's primary benefit (lower power) doesn't really matter for desktop systems with <= 4 DIMMs.

Not sure if I'll wait for Skylake or not. I have waited a loooooong time for a new computer. I have bought my case and Cooler Master Evo Hyper 212 CPU cooler in preparation for buying the i7 4790. Believe it or not I'm coming from a Q6600 so waiting for Skylake is a killer after waiting for so long. Seems like yesterday I read about Haswell coming out. Then if I wait and buy Skylake I bet a year latter a new CPU comes out! LOL

I just use the desktop for gaming. FS2004 and BF2 with the AIX mod are my main games. I do have BF3, but I need to learn the game more. Between not being able to fly an aircraft and being shot every 5 seconds I was bored of it. I guess that was my first COD4 experience until I got better.

I'm recycling the barely used Antec Gamer 520 PSU, GTX 560 TI and DVD/RW. Will buy a bigger PSU and better GPU when GTA V comes out for PC.

I do not play the GTA games, but GTA V is out for PC (as of April?).

I think you are fine going with Haswell parts now. Upper end CPU power, like your Q6600 back in the day, will last you years, particularly if you are willing to overclock. With Broadwell parts dropping, the Haswell CPUs are getting price drops.

There is always another tech just around the corner. For GPUs however, waiting a few weeks to see what AMD is doing is probably a safe bet.
