To help out with my sons dance theatre I have agreed to do the video production. I have built every computer I have ever owned since 1989. so I'm fairly handy with the hardware. The rendering and processing of the video takes forever.
I have a Amd Athlon 2500+ barton core with 1 gig of Samsung ram on a Asus A7N8X. I'd like to build a cluster to run as a render farm. I swap O/S by using a hot swap bay so I can run either XP home or Suse Linux 8.2 profesional. I can use linux as the O/S but I will have to buy the Linux version of Studio 8. If I use XP I have to use Windows server. I plan on building my own rack on the cheap and I'm going to use 3 AMD Athlon XP 2200's for the other computers and a extra 4 port SMC router in the cluster. My question is I can't find a book that just tells me "do this to setup" I'm trying to do this as cheap as I can and get the most bang for the buck. Would you pay the extra and buy the Linux version of Studio 8 plus the Clucter software or spend the money on Windows server. If anyone in the Atlanta area has some experence with this I sure would appreciate it.. K

I'm not too familiar with your application but if you're moving video around I'd suggest gig ethernet.

There is a free ware cluster/distributed computing system out there but I can't remember it for the life of me.
