Building 2 computers for AutoCad

tomshardware.com (ugh) and anandtech have both reviewed professional graphics cards. the athlon is still the most bang for the buck. they will not reap the benefits from the athlon 64. the pentium 4 would really help, but it doesnt really matter what "processor" you get.

get the Western digital raptors, the 37 GB will do. add in a separate data drive if possible. they will also need some sort of archival system, so perhaps a cdrw burner. go around the sites mentioned above, and search for performance on autocad. shove whatever budget is left over into AS MUCH RAM AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY HANDLE. double check to make sure the 1200 does not include windows licenses, etc.

now, the problem is, they are only doing plans, not simulations. will they plan on doing 3d modeling of foundations and the like for their clients? if so, the video card matters.

You guys are definitely giving me a lot of good ideas. He is designing large barns that hold up to 2000 cattle. So they are pretty big with a lot of detail. As I mentioned earlier he is telling me that with the system that he is using now (pIII 800MZ w/ ??? of RAM) can take a min or 2 to just change views. This is what he would like me to fix. I am assuming that this is because of the lack of RAM and processor speed but I am not 100% sure.

At this point I am leaning toward ASUS K8V, Athlon64 3200+, 1 gig Mushkin PC3500 level1 and a Matrox 2d video card, unless anyone has a better idea or suggestions. I will wait to hear Jonny Blaze?s ideas first though.

Again, thanks tons for your suggestions.

If he's not going to o/c his computer just go for some pc3200 value memory from a good brand.
