im thinkin of building a new rig because im going crazy over the crappy one i have right now. the only problem is that im a newb at this stuff so any advice is welcome. :)
current "rig": amd duron 750mhz|320mb sdram|20GB hd|80GB seagate 2mb cache hd|32mb video card

im hopin to build a pc that will last me 2 years before putting some upgrades on it. i already have a monitor, case with 420-watt ps and im keepin the 80gb hd. to start off, should i get ahtlonxp or athlon 64?

It's easy. You go into the BIOS and start raising the FSB :).

For $300, Athlon XP. In a A64, $300 would get you a CPU, mobo and PSU. RAM would put you over for sure.

What you can get to help:
CPU: Barton Athlon XP of some kind.
Mobo: Abit NF7 is a good choice.
RAM: PC3200 512MB. Good to OC to 200MHz FSB or higher, and otherwise, only like $1-$4 more than PC2700, so why not?
PSU: 420w...Enlight/Thermaltake?
Video: FX 5900XT, Radeon 9800 Pro ($175-$210), or wait for the next gen cards to drop in price until around September. If you want something not great but that can do some light gaming, a Radeon 9100 (non-SE) would be good, a 9200SE would be easier to find ($35-$60). Nothing special, but if you've held on to that rig this long, it could be worth the wait for the current video cards (when they get to sane prices).
