Then get a separate box, my server and the drives are on 24/7

I have two main machines one I use for downloading and encryption the other(my main rig the i7) I use for encryption encoding playing games- you get the idea
they simply cannot service the entire house I need a dedicated box. And I do want it to be power efficient. The idea is to have the whole household on one central encoder/decoder that can handle all fourteen(I am counting Droids and phones also) of our computers(separate PIA accounts just wouldn't make much sense plus they have to have admin priv to run on a computer).

it's an AMD FX-8350
none of the boxes are at the main junction anyway and there would be no fitting them even if I could move them.

is there anyway to set pfsense to use another ip address besides 192.168.1.1 at install?
My main router is on that and I am just trying to figure out enough about psense to see if it accepts passwords longer than 60 characters in the openVPN field.

Just unplug the network cable til you can change it.

I tried that.
Something must be wrong with my settings because when I unplugged my Ethernet and tried to log in using my browser nothing happened. Am I doing it wrong?

What cable did you unplug? Your PC with the VM running pfsense from your other router? If that's the case, I still think you'll have to use a switch to connect the PC to because the data will still go out and come back (to the VM running pfsense).

If so, do you use DHCP or do you have your PC manually assigned an IP address?

try to set your ip to the same range as pfsense, so 192.168.1.10 and gateway is 192.168.1.1, still without connecting ethernet.

Assuming the same PC, can you pass data from the host OS to the VM (or between VM's) without a connection to Ethernet (or are you saying keep an Ethernet connection but remove the hardware router from the Ethernet)?

(By the way, I'm assuming that he is running pfsense from a VM and trying to access the setup page from the host OS on that same machine)

just making sure it doesn't need to go routing, normally you can hit a client from the host no matter what the ip is.

Birddad, what does the console show when you boot up pfsense?

normally you should see the text console showing a few options like this and the top line tells you the ip. and you should be able to change it from there, without having to go to the webserver.

If you are using Firefox, be sure to update to newest version. Earlier version has difficulty connect to pfSense.

And try this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3tAdOPXTxk

Adjust video playback speed to 0.5. Original video speed is too fast.

Ignore the VM import section, replace it with you own installation.

In this example, you don't have to use another VM to test behind pfSense, instead you use your host machine for testing pfSense VM.

You set LAN port IP through pfSense VM's console, no need to bring up browser.

And you don't need 2nd physical NIC, you use Microsoft's KM-TEST loopback adapter as second virtual NIC, it then gets IP from pfSnese LAN port DHCP server.

It's for local machine VM testing, but should be good enough to test PIA VPN.

After testing, just remove proxy setting.

fraid not. I don't know what to do when I get to that screen. I was expecting it to go into a server. The ip is 192.168.1.25
it fails to load with an external browser.

so you set the pfsense ip to 192.168.1.25 and yoou cannot bring up the webconfigurator on a browser?
what do you get?

I can't get Waterfox or Chrome to work so far, I am now trying it with my ethernet plugged in and still nothing. I followed the tutorials I found on google to try and get this going.

What's the IP address you are getting from your router before you install VirtualBox and pfSnese VM?

You need to make sure you configure em0 WAN & em1 LAN on different IP range

use the console screen to assign them

if your em0 WAN (bridged to your existing network card in VirtualBox) is getting a DHCP IP from router, that's OK, but you have to assign an IP in different range on loopback adapter and configured it like the video I linked.

====

if you don't want to use loopback adapter, then configure pfSense 2nd NIC using VirtualBox "Internal Network", and create a VM (Linux or Windows) also assign it's NIC using VirtualBox "Internal Network", then you are good to go.

Do you mean my router to the internet or my access point? I have em0 WAN on 192.168.1.25 and em1 LAN on 192.168.1.26
