Hope this doesn't violate any rules about self-promotion but I think people will be interested. Feel free to delete if it is not allowed or will need someone else to post something about this new Laptop DIY site.

Coboc.com

Get all the parts, tools, and training materials you need to customize and build your own laptop. Nuff said. =)

calbear81,

Sorry, but your link to coboc.com is to a commercial sales page. I believe your statement that you do not intend to spam our forums, and you are welcome to continue to participate, here, but if we allowed you to continue, we would then have to monitor every similar post from others who may intend only to promote their company.

You are also welcome to include a tasteful link to your site in your sig file.

Thanks for understanding. We hope you enjoy yourself on our forums. :)

That's true.. I'd be more than happy to participate and answer any questions. We're trying to build up a DIY community for laptops.

just an fyi, the website name itself seems to in no way correlate to the content, although hardocp got away with it.

There's an internal meaning to it... it's kind of long but it's actually a long acronym as well as a palindrome!

The post is probably going to get pulled but I wanted to place it here in Off-Topic because I wanted to not violate any rules..

The site hasn't officially launched yet so think of it as a preview..

Hey, I thought I was the only person on earth that did this (well, I have a distributor that does the assembly for me and my units are unbranded upon arrival here)

We've secured agreements with all of the major barebook manufacturers. Since it's a preview site, not all of our inventory is available yet. We're planning to keep adding as we grow and help build the laptop modding community.

Hey EyeMWing,

You can build it yourself and save money as well as control more of the product's specifications, features, etc. There's a whole new level of customization you can do since we carry spare parts.. stuff like custom keyboards, custom backpanels (painted, laser-cut) can all be done. If you try that on a retail laptop, you immediately void the warranty on the entire unit not to mention you'll probably be charged an arm and a leg to get it replaced.

Also, all of the barebooks come with a service manual and we're looking to get some technician training videos direct from the manufacturer as well to help people get started.

Bragging Rights! This should be the first forum the site has appeared on. You guys are definitely the cream of the crop when it comes to evaluating whether something has potential or not. Once we get rolling, we can definitely consider some AT-exclusive deals. =)

I think that is pretty seweet. No graphics cards on the site yet, but since its a preview, ill let it slide ;). I really like the idea of providing service manuals etc. I got my Asus notebook from geared2play.com (great site too btw) but they wont give you service manuals and stuff, so i think you got something that a lot of people would value there. You would also appear to be one of the few if not only sites to sell laptop components and let the customer do the building. I think people are getting bored with DIY desktops (i am anyway) and this provides us with something new. And how bout that ATOT discount ;););)

edit: i would also have a wider variety of hard drives imo.

We're working on securing as many mobile graphics cards as we can as seperate items. Right now, it's tough because there are only a few laptops out there using the PCI-Express MXM specificaiton for upgradeable graphics. But this will be the trend for all high-performance laptops this year and in the future. We'll keep working and thanks for all of the positive feedback.
