I think many of us could do better. In an effort to find cool and new things in the technology world Ive yet to see, I'd like to see what computer you can build thats UNDER 10 grand. Im sure many of you are creative, so lets see what you got! If its 1c over, it doesnt count. :p

Intel 8088
640K RAM
5.25" FDD
3.5" FDD
800W Sharpie-certified AT PSU
Typewriter

Depends on the usage; I'd probably just end up building a somewhat budget-minded rig and saving the rest for something else, like an upgrade a year or two down the road.

I think its stupid to spend that much, unless the majority goes into a wicked display and audio setup that will be with you long after the PC is tossed aside~ I wouldn't spend more than 1200 or so on a PC even if I had the money (which I do ;) )

And ts3433 is right...That pc will put you back the world.

No point for me -- I'd rather send most of the money off to Schwab to invest rather than waste it on overpriced tech that will be slower than a $2,000 computer within 1.5-2 years.

My December 2003 system cost $1,700 and for December 2004 I just replaced the video card with a 6800 to keep it a good gaming system for another year. Total cost about $2,000.

Meanwhile, Vanguard VFINX S&P500 index mutual fund shares are up over 20% since then, so the $8K has almost generated another $2,000 to pay for the next system.

Yep, looks about right... seriously, I wouldn't bother - past a certain point you get some hardcore diminishing returns on dollars spent.

Why not just build 5 really really good computers for that price and connect them together with a 1Gb network. :p

Beowulf cluster
Redhat 6.2

You didn't specify what it's supposed to be used for, so your best return on the dollar is clustering.

You didn't say it had to be a PC either. :p

$786 ....... Iwill zMAXdp dual-Opteron SFF
$1360 ..... 2x Opteron 246HE
$1160 ..... 2x 2GB PC3200 REG+ECC
$744 ....... 2x 400GB SATA Seagate
$??? .......... Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Combo Drive
$586 ....... Asus 6800 Ultra AGP
$1800 ..... 2x 23" Apple Cinema Display
$120 ....... Logitech Di Novo
$415 ....... Creative GigaWorks 5750 7.1 THX Speakers

Just under $7000 before the DVD recorder and shipping. Ecxept for the obvious, everything fits in the SFF (i.e., no extraneous external peripherals). I could cheat and use 30" Cinema Displays, but do not believe that they'll work with the video card. For that matter, I could have claimed the Opterons 250s for another $300 or so, but I actually expect this configuration to run. :)

I'm very seriously contemplating a system based on the zMAXdp with "only" 2GB RAM, one 400GB drive (but with one 74GB Raptor), and a less-capable video card and displays.

OP: Could you specify if you want the the best gaming or the highest number of flops
OP is just playing "what if" so you can do either, neither will actually be used for anything.
