There's ALWAYS something better just around the corner. It depends on how much you want to spend, how often you want to spend, and how slow your current machine it.

For me, I will not upgrade unless the upgrade is more than twice the overclocked speed of the current machine, and costs what I want to pay. IE if I have a 1.6A, overclocked to 2.3, then my next upgrade will not be until 4.6GHz, at a price that I feel is OK.

If your current system is nice, does everything you want, I suggest you hold off until the Hammer, or perhaps even the first revision of the Hammer.

If I were you I would upgrade my RAM to 512Mb and see where things are at another year from now. I know there aint jack that really stresses your system. I have a PIII 933 that runs everything nice and smooth. No upgrades in my immediate future.

The 1.6A or 1.8A OC'd above the 2.2GHz mark seems to be the way to go for raw performance right now. If you don't overclock then the AMD XP2000+ is also a good choice, being that the Intel P4-2GHz is so expensive.

It's simple just ask yourself these two questions:

1) Do you NEED a new system (ie: is there 1 extremely important task or a number of less important tasks that your current system is handling well below average?)

2) Do you actually NEED a 64bit system? (If you answer this question yes then please let us all know why)

Yes + No = Upgrade
No + Yes = Wait
No + No = Wait
Yes + Yes = Do a minor upgrade (RAM or Processor only on your current system....buy used parts if needed) then do a full Hammer upgrade.

I have a 1gig Athlon and would like to upgrade to a XP or something but don't have the money to spare to go to DDR and a new mobo. I won't upgrade for a while(at least 4 to 6 months). Besides after you upgrade you will be all happy but after a week or so you won't be as happy. You would be like you are now with you current system.

I just bought a GF3 Ti200 and was tickled to death when I first got it. But after running 3Dmark2001 and a few games the moment was definately gone. But its still a awsome card.

I've currently got a Tbird 900 KT133 rig and after some deliberation I've decided to give the Northwood a shot. 1.6A overclocked over 2gigs fits the x2 criteria, and the price isn't to outrageous. Now if I had an XP capable mobo and something better than PC133, and didn't ever do any video editing I'd wait. By the time the Hammer hits the sweet spot (over a year from now) it might be time for another upgrade.

nForce 2 is coming out soon probably with at least dual ddr333 channels with 5.4gb/s of bandwith! KT400 or KT333A is arriving in months with a double speed increase in the vlink connection.
I850E with 133mhz bus and is arriving shortly.
The XP2100+ shouldn't be but a month or so away.
AGP 8X is starting to be adopted in motherboard designs.

There is always something better, but if you are even considering about waiting then save-up for another couple of months and some of these things might be available for you.
