Shuttle Silver XPC Barebone System for Socket 478 at 533/800MHz FSB Intel CPU

I plan on OC'ing the proc to atleast 3.0Ghz. Hopefully everything will be all gravy with the cooling and thermal compounds. I read an article and they Oc'ed it to 3.0Ghz on standard cooling. Anyhoo, i was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions on parts that i should replace etc. So far the system is at $1300. Any swapping in and out I really would like to keep it below 1400.

Thanks!

OHbtw, i dont need optical drives cuz i already have them.

Your system's going to be on an awfully short leash with just 256MB of RAM, just to start with the obvious :(

On Pricewatch:

P4 2.4C = $153
P4 2.6C = $165
P4 2.8C = $164

1. Surely you will spend $11 more for extra 400mhz speed increase right? Besides 2.8 overclocks to 3.5+ and is more likely to do so since it has 400mhz extra headroom in comparison to the 2.4C. So this should be your definate choice for p4 as the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

2. If you are comfortable with Geil Ram why not get 2 sticks of 256mb Geil Ultra Platinum PC3500 2.5-3-3-6 which is very cheap and at 2.8V will allow for 2-3-3-6 timings at 216FSB (but you are more than likely to use ratios anyways)

3. for your LCD monitor I would consider something else like Samsung 173X or even NEC1765 or 1760 or Hitachi CML174 so you wouldn't be hindered as much by ghosting and what not when watching movies and playing videogames as these monitors are liked in the community for the great performance they offer

4. FX5700 Ultra is a bad choice for a videocard as it costs around $170 I imagine

These are all the cards that offer better performance at equal or slightly higher costs which are well worth the upgrade from 5700Ultra

a) 9700 non-pro = $165
b) 5900xt/se = $177
c) 9700 Pro = $184
d) 9800Pro = $204

Now especially cards b) c) and d) will be like 100%+ faster at higher resolutions while allowing for better image quality setting and will last you much longer (esp 9700/9800 series as they also offer PS2.0 support and are a lot faster in DX9 games vs. Nvidia derivatives). The highest delta is about $34 from your $170 but the performance difference is astounding.

5. Does the shuttle barebone come with a power supply and motherboard? Otherwise i can recommend you some as well
- NOTE***This is the expensive part of your computer since it costs substantially more than a good case and a good power supply and I do not know how good this motherboard is and how well-suited it is for overclocking etc.

6. You should be fine for overclocking the 2.4 to 3.0 ghz on stock but beyond that i doubt it esp in a small case like u chose, and 2.8 to 3.0 should be a gimmie but i'd recommend getting Zalman CNPS7000 or Thermalright SLK900/947 series or something decent. I do not know if either will fit in a case you wanna get though.....do you really wanna get that case? I mean Kingwin 424 black case with side window is awesome and coupled with a good power supply would be cheaper and more practical...but I wont recommend on the case since it is personal preference

7. Also if you plan on gaming more than doing other tasks I'd recommend getting A64 3000+

cheers.

the case comes with mobo + heatsink + fan. the mobo is good for OC'ing apparently cuz they managed to do it to 3.0ghz without any temp change. what im worried about with the 2.8ghz is that its a prescott core which i heard can run a little hot. with my SFF box im afraid of a lack of air flow.

oh and for the monitor. the stats on the xerox are better than the Samsung 173P and its 150 cheaper. and the pricing is a really big deal for me. and im really like the silver color of the monitor =p

Well get a 2.8 Northwood instead....much better choice in my opinion.

Check this out, all from Newegg, except for the AS5 which you can get for 6 bucks from SVC. This should be a good bit faster than what you are looking at, especially the 2.8GHZ processor, you put a 2.8B in your update, this is a 2.8C. The BenQ monitor is also pretty nice, I have used it a few times on system builds and it's great for the price!

No DVI, that may cost you a little more, but it's a great monitor. The main difference is that what I've configured has faster, more overclockable memory, not to mention 1GB v. 512MB which is becoming big in newer games. The processor is also a 2.8C, which is 800MHZ v. 533MHZ, plus Hyper Threading, which will be big imporvements. The Hitachi will be faster than the Seagate, you can checkout storagereview.com for more details. I have a 160GB Hitachi and it is awesome.

I can barely tell the differnce between the two on my Samsung 181T, I run in DVI, which does appear to be a little brighter, but that's really it for me. In your situtation I would rather get more computerpower than spend the extra money on DVI.

I like the BenQ as a value monitor and I love me Samsung 181T, I've had it for 2 years without a bit of trouble. It just depends on how much you are looking to spend. Some of the lower end Samsung monitors may not be as good as the BenQ, because you might be paying more for the name than the product.

i read your rig too... was really surprised that you wanted prescott over northwood... didn't even think about the typo... oh well...

can tell you have put a lot of time and effort into your selections...little things do add up when all is said and done... kinda like a pile of poop vs. a polished turd...

hats off to ya!!
