What do you mean? 2600K is $95 more. All you get is hyperthreading which is not useful to you most of the time, see here (most of the differences you see here are down to the 100MHz stock clock difference).

the i5 jumped from $199 to $225+ and i found the i7 for like $265 or so.

i7 for $265 starts to sound nice, but only if you use hyperthreading heavy apps. If you don't, there's no point paying the extra. It should certainly be out of bounds on your budget.

Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 is essentially a Pro3 with SLI/Crossfire and Gen3 (PCIe 3.0 compatibility with Ivy Bridge). The Extreme3 may also have better power phase design, I'm not sure; however the Pro3 should OC fine as well.

How does the ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 compare to the ASRock Pro3? I found a deal for the i5 and that mobo. Thanks

Like lehtv said, the Extreme3 Gen3 is the next step up. Then the extreme 4 Gen 3, and so forth. The higher the number the better the mobo, features, and the higher the cost. I think ASRock tops out at Extreme 7 or something like that.

There's just Z68 Extreme3, Extreme4 and Extreme7. No 5 or 6. P67 has Extreme6 but no 7. Don't ask me why their naming scheme is so bizarre...

I'm looking at the same pcu + mobo combo, do you mind me asking what deal you found?

I noticed that Micro Center's are showing out of stock on the 2500k's. It also looks like prices have gone up a bit. I'm on the hunt!

This i5-2500k business is really starting to get annoying!

It was a newegg business deal. I was just about to see if using my parents' tax id was legal but the deal is dead. 🙁 Sorry man!

No problem, thanks for the reply! Yeah if I find a deal I'll post it for you.

Same here. Feel free to stop buy and see how much over budget my budget build is. Im TRYING to only use items that are on sale, but there really aren't many. BF/CM sucked!

Is there some sort of i5-2500k shortage/reason for a shortage I don't know about?

Should I wait for the 7000 series of radeon chips to buy a GPU?

I was assuming that because of all the BF deals everyone was just out of the 2500k's until the next shipment, whenever that is. Hopefully the Micro Center near my work will have more in tomorrow so I can stop by on the way home.

^ Yep, I remember seeing it for $199.99. Also MC has those mobo + cpu combo deals that did pretty well. Stores are just waiting for more stock after all the sales last few days.

Edit: mWave.com has the 2500k in stock but its at the regular price of $225. Its one store to watch because they sometimes have cpu sales better than NE but this year NE is hard to beat as far as online only stores go.

I didn't buy the 2500k when i saw it for $199 because I didn't think that was a sale price. It was that price before bf. 🙁 Figured bf/cm would have lowered the price.

It was $150 on bf at Micro Centers. As far as I know it will be $180 once they get more in (in store only). Correct me if I'm wrong.

It wasn't that price before Black Friday anywhere except for Microcenter, which is always cheaper on CPUs.

The holiday season has just begun. MC, Amazon, NewEgg, etc., they will all have more sales. The closer we get to Xmas the more sales we should see. The question is when to jump. I'd say if you see one for $200 again go ahead and jump on it and dont regret it because that is a good price from an online vendor. My guess only MC will possibly have it lower than that but they are unique in how they do things and it is in store only and most buyers don't live near one I'm guessing and cannot access that deal. Watch Frys too if one is near you.

It looks like there's a spot on the box of the 212+ where it got nailed by something and the box was pierced. It went so far as to push the plastic up against the heat fins a bit. They seemed like in that spot (very front) the fins were a bit closer so I spaced them out a bit but I think I'm just looking for problems.

Otherwise everything looked ok. The anal side of me wants to exchange it, but the logical side of me doesn't give a shit because it looks perfect as far as i can tell and an exchange would be a pain in the ass (rebates and whatnot). As long as it looks like everything is intact i should be ok, right?

Got the i5-2500k + asrock extreme3 gen3.

Went with the extreme3 over the pro3 since it apparently has a voltage regulator that's nicer than the pro3 (well, all I could find is that it was the same voltage regulator as the extreme4, which I assume (my assumptions are usually wrong lol) is nicer than the pro3). SLI may come in handy one day too, who knows.

Yay!
