Hi all! New build time! This time for a friend.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
gaming, skyrim being the current highest taxer

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$1000 max
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from. USA

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
Any site is fine...newegg for most of it though, but wherever good deals can be found :) we are not near a microcenter :( (I wish we were though)

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
None, just price/pref :)
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are. keyboard, mouse, speakers, and a tv for monitor, a monitor will be bought later on a seperate budget.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
he's not a big techie, so I'd say default, but if the budget and build allow it, I can coach him. I also though, in the event of say, an asrock board, we'd have the utility to help him learn as well.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1080p, potentially upgrading later, but not planned yet.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
1-2 weeks

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system? windows, 7 preferred.

Also, he'd like a black case, lights are ok(red) but not required, he does require powerful top exhaust, and preferably intake filters. Also needs a blu-ray drive.

That's all I can think of for now, falling asleep while typing this. :3 so I'll edit/update later if I need to. Thanks and night!

Mobo + RAM Gigabyte Z87X-D3H + 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix 1600MHz $154 (the board is digital 8-phase, excellent overclocker)
CPU + HDD i5-4670K + Seagate 1TB $292
Cooling Arctic Cooling i30 $30 (very quiet and decent performance)
GPU MSI 7950 Twin Frozr $225 AR
Blu-ray LG UH12NS30 $39 AP
Case + PSU Corsair 300R + Corsair CX600 $85 AR
OS Win 8 64 $89 or Win 7 64 $91

Total: $974 ($914 after rebates)

Optional:
SSD Plextor M5 Pro 128GB SSD $102 (5-year warranty)
Or upgrade GPU to: Sapphire 7970 $290 AR

Some of these will obviously not be available in 1-2 weeks... but you should be able to get similar bang for buck with different deals

I agree with this, nice choices.

Just FYI, Newegg never allows you to tack on coupon codes on top of combo deals. Those coupon codes you list above don't work on the combos you link. Still excellent prices, though, and a great build.

Oh? I was sure I'd seen promos being used in mfenn's thread with the i5+mobo combo. Huh. Post edited.

Probably wisest to leave the SSD out then if he wants to stay in budget.

Very nice combo deals lehtv! And yeah, Newegg doesn't allow you to stack promo codes with combos, only rebates and gift cards.

Hi everyone, thanks for the help! That build looks awesome. I crossed referenced it with mfenn's update, but they're almost identical :p

But yea, the SSD can definitely wait, not too worried bout that for him.

Thanks again for the help :3 his system is gonna make me jealous >_> maybe I can swap parts without him knowing....lol

thanks :)

You can actually keep everything the same, but drop the cooler, switch to this CPU, and look for a B85 motherboard. That should save about $100--enough to step up to a better GPU or get an SSD.

hey Sleepingforest, thanks for the tip! :) haven't had time to research the non-overclockers. So, tomorrow, cause I'm too tired to continue, I'll work on a build with those. I think he'll intend to pocket the difference and look at upgrading gpu next year, or add-on a monitor now instead of later, either way it's sounding good, so thanks again :)

You don't have to overclock even though the components are capable. The main reason to switch down reallocate money to other parts of the build. Sleepingforest hit it right on the nose.

i5 4430 $165 AP
ASRock H87 Pro4 $88
PowerColor 7970 $290 AR

:D yep I grabbed up the CPU Sleepingforest suggested, right now the build is:

Case: NZXT Phantom green/black, $110 AP(after he did much research this is the one he wanted :) )
HDD : Toshiba 2TB $85 AP
PSU: Corsair CX600, $38 AR AP
CPU: i5 4430 $175 AP
Motherboard: ASRock H87 Pro4 $88
GPU: Sapphire 7950 3GB 100352-3L $200 AR
Ram:G.SKILL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 $64
Optic drive: LG UH12NS30 $39 AP
Windows 7 $99

Total: $898 AP AR, $873 if ordered today

Alternative for motherboard and ram: Asus Z87-A board with 8GB Crucial Ballistix sport for a combo price of $164. I'm concidering this, cause he's on the fence with overclocking, he doesn't want to worry about it now, but might later, and this mobo would give him an easier time upgrading to that. Total then would be $910 AP AR

I know I said we're looking at a week or so to order, and yea...deals come and go, but if we get to a final build, we're prepared to order today, which also means a $25 promo for newegg orders $250+.

Also at this price range, concidering budget, few upgrades could be made. I'm looking at that 7970, or a monitor, and lastly would be SSD.

oh, and a question: He won't need an aftermarket heatsink until/if he wants to overclock, right? or should I just nab one up now?

Good build, but a huge shame if he doesn't get an SSD in there. Just pick up the Toshiba SSD that Newegg has for $80 today: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820168062

It's a decent SSD, and any SSD is 100x better than no SSD, especially with this budget. He'd never notice the difference between a 7950 and 7970, but that $80 will be noticeable every time he runs an app with an SSD.

Also, I think you might not realize that you can't overclock an i5-4430, so all your questions above are answered very quickly - No to the Z87, no to the aftermarket heatsink. If he wants this option, you'll need to change your CPU/motherboard pick entirely. That would increase the cost by at least $60.

The $110 case is killing this build's bang for buck... That's 12% of the budget spent on something that has zero impact on anything useful - a $50 case is what you should be getting if you didn't care about paying having groovy Phantom looks.

The Corsair 300R I recommended is a great case, functionally not far from a Phantom. And you'd pay $60 less... that would almost pay for the SSD.

^ I agree, to a point. I'd never buy the Phantom, but computer cases are a pretty personal thing, and it seems like the buyer really likes the look of it. That pays for itself.

Yea, I left the case to him, and I think we've adapted well enough. But yea I totally agree with dropping the thoughts on te z87, it was an afterthought is all. I did see that ssd on the daily sale, totally gettin that :3

Thanks again for the input, the build is as discribed in my last post + the ssd, I'll order in a few hours!

I'm gonna cry...just as i was buying parts, they sold out of the sapphire 7950 :( but, I did find a promo code for $20 off win 7 home 64-bit :/ and i found $12 off the CX600 :D and since the deal for that SSD is over, I went with an 840 EVO for $108, used it to nab up the $25 off $250, so doing really well this time on the deals :D

As a replacement, I'm looking at an MSI 7950 for $180 AR or the Powercolor 7950 for $209 AR. Also thought about a 760, but i don't think they'll be much of a difference to be worth the extra $50, plus I think my friend is looking forward to the NS bundle.

Hey all, build went great :D friend loves his new comp. only issue is: I didn't buy a sata cable for the oem drive...yea...but it's on order, so he's only out his storage drive for a couple days. :) thanks again for the help!

Also, is it GPU-Z that we should run to break in the the card? Though he's been maxing out some games, so probably a moot point now.
