I think that we should have a Anandtech contest to see who can build the cheapest possible computer from parts.
Here's my idea for the rules:
1) You need to use all NEW parts from major online retailers like Newegg and ZipZoomFly. No "Bob's house of RAM"!
2) You need to include ALL of the following parts:
Motherboard
CPU and fan
Memory
Hard Drive
Optical Drive
Video (Integrated or card)
Audio (Integrated or card)
Ethernet (Integrated or card)
Keyboard and Mouse
Monitor
Case and Power Supply
I'm not sure if the OS should be optional or not. If you choose Linux or Vista, though, make sure that you can prove that the cheap hardware you chose has driver support.
3) The computer needs to theoretically WORK when done. This means that the parts need to be compatible (ie no AMD cpus with an Intel chipset motherboard, or SATA drives on a motherboard with no SATA ports)
4) Shipping costs and tax are not included (since they vary by location), and you can subtract rebate costs.
Let me know what you think!
Here's a sample for $283:

Sure, it's crap, but it's cheap and hopefully compatible crap
