Build a system for $150?

I'm wondering how to go about building a computer for $150, I don't mind using ebay if I have to. It doesn't need any optical drives/FDD drives, Hard drives or anything like that, just needs a case, PSU, ram, CPU and motherboard. Think I can build a system like this for that cheap? (I could probably get most of the parts on ebay, excluding the PSU). So, would it be a sempron 64 system or an athlon xp system? What would be a reliable cheap board I could get? (I may not need a case at all, I think I could obtain one for free)

Yes. I can get a PSU for $50 so I'm wondering about the motherboard and CPU, I can likely get both on ebay but I'm not sure if it would be an Athlon XP based system or sempron system. (This system needs to be able to play Counter Strike Source) The motherboard having integrated graphics would be nice though I don't know if it could play CS:S or not. Otherwise I'll use one of my older AGP graphics cards lying around or pick up one cheap on ebay...

I believe outpost.com has a sempron + motherboard combo for like $90.
Buy a cheap case with crappy psu included for like $30.
And a 256MB stick of ram for $20.

That B110 is one lousy computer. I own a Dimension 3000, so I know what I'm talking about. I think you could build something better out of $150 worth of parts bought on Ebay or Anandtech forums. At least you'd have an AGP slot so you could add some halfway decent graphics later.

Have you every built or assembled a computer?

To get all those parts from ebay within that cost, Make sure they work correctly and at the end of all the time spent actually have a computer that can do something is beyond most people. Not to mention that parts will be old/used and without warranty.

Either ways I think $150 is too low a budget to build even a Rig forget a decent gaming rig which runs CS:S

I don't think you can build anything decent that can run CSS for $150. Your best bet is to go with prebuilt.

Where is this $90 combo? A decent PSU is very important FYI.

Wow that is a great deal. I've been on the lookout for four computers for a computer lab my church is putting together. $150 for a new computer /w OS and warranty is a great deal. A Windows XP license is worth that much alone.

Not necessarily, for such low power consumption a cheap with case power supply may be sufficient. I find that power supplies that are fairly legit with their ratings (like a 300w in a case that actually performs like a 300w) are usually pretty good, the problem ones are the ones that claim they are 500w and then die.

It's possible to play CS:S fairly well on a cheap discrete card. I played for a long time with my MX420 (was a budget card 3 years ago... dx7-based card). I still have the card if you're interested. Works and overclocks well.

You can always buy a used system for $150 if you can't afford the shipping, from your local computer shop.

Used 1

Used 2

You have many options, if you go used.
You can still stay within your $150 budget.
